Neasham pair ready for Anamoe bout

3 minute read

Annabel Neasham is looking for competitive returns from two of her stable big guns in the Apollo Stakes.

Dual Group 1 winner Mo'Unga is renowned for his laidback attitude towards trackwork and barrier trials but the five-year-old appears to have turned over a new leaf.

While his two trial efforts were typically casual, the horse worked sharply in an exhibition gallop with stablemate Laws of Indices at Randwick last week and Rob Archibald, racing manager for trainer Annabel Neasham, said his trackwork had been in a similar mould.

"He's not a horse that traditionally shows a huge amount at home, but this time in he has been working particularly well," Archibald said.

"He is probably a bit more forward this preparation than he was last preparation.

"He has won a Group One over 1400-metres before and we think we've got him going nicely at the moment."

Mo'unga resumes in Saturday's Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick and while he didn't show up fresh last preparation, his overall first-up record is outstanding.

He has won half of his six first-up runs, highlighted by his 2021 triumph in the Group 1 Winx Stakes over Saturday's course and distance.

"You're up against Anamoe and other very good horses, it's going to be a big test, but we're really pleased with the way he's going and we think he'll run well," Archibald said.

Laws Of Indices also tackles the Apollo Stakes after running the race of his life when third behind California Spangle and Golden Sixty in the Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin in December.

While the travel and quarantine requirements can be taxing on horses, so far Laws Of Indices has shown the stable he has coped well.

"He had to do quarantine there after the race and he had to do quarantine when he landed so he only got a short time out but we're happy with the way he's come back in," Archibald said.

"He runs well fresh, he's going nicely at home and he should run well."

Neasham is yet to lock in autumn plans for her pair but Mo'unga is likely to have another run in Sydney before heading to Melbourne where the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 25 will be among the options.
