Celebrating the unsung heroes of British racing

3 minute read

The Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (TIEAs) were held on a special evening at York racecourse, showing much appreciation for the hard work, grit and determination of the racing and breeding industry.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson opened the event, speaking highly of the finalists for exemplifying all that is best about this field. The evening was made possible by generous sponsorship from Godolphin, and generous prizes of nearly £130,000 for the winners.

Richard Johnson, former jockey, had the honour of presenting the awards. His time as a stable boy was brought to mind, and he acknowledged the difficult days that can come with the job. He was delighted to be part of the event, celebrating those worthy of recognition.

Joe Saumarez Smith, chair of the BHA, said it was the "most important evening in the racing calendar" and Nick Luck, chair of the judges praised the "unsung heroes". The awards were presented to many, each one with a touching story.

Ryan Kavanagh won the newcomer award after losing his brother, finding comfort in the horses he looked after. Claire Ricks, who has been in racing since 1974, won the dedication award after saving horses from a stable fire in 2012. Bethan Byrne, who won the stud staff award, said the recognition from those she worked with was "phenomenal".

Sarah Guest, the overall employee of the year, was praised for stepping up when her boss was ill. The event was moving, highlighting the people that make British racing special.

Hugh Anderson, managing director of Godolphin, offered final words of encouragement, urging people to celebrate the hardworking staff daily, not just during the awards ceremony. It reinforces the fact that no matter what lies ahead, there will always be individuals dedicated to their jobs and selflessly making this industry successful.
