Angel set to fly in the last

3 minute read

Trainer Gary White is predicting his promising 3YO Zulu Angel will make the trip home all that more pleasant when he tackles the S.B.Freeland BM62 over 1450m, as the last race on the card in Launceston on Wednesday night.

Zulu Angel won two races in a row before a fast finishing unlucky sixth, beaten 1.35 lengths by Jaguar Stone in the $100,000 3YO Classic in Launceston on Cup Day.

In that race, Zulu Angel was back near the tail with the winner coming around the home turn and while Jaguar Stone got to the outside and rattled home to win in a photo, Zulu Angel was held up in the last 100m behind a wall of horses.

"He's come on well, he's just a big baby and I told the owners I would give him a couple more runs for maturity.

"In that race (the 3YO Classic), he needed to get to the outside to wind up, he got all the gun runs but once he got there it was no good to him because once he got his momentum he had nowhere to go and went to the line on the bridle," Gary White said.

And while barrier one is not the best draw for Zulu Angel, White is confident his jockey will be able to manoeuvre the gelding away from the rail.

"I'm hoping I don't hear you say he's in an awkward position at some stage," White said with a laugh.

"David Pires seems to be able to make the right decisions in races, that's why he's where he is and hopefully he can extricate him at the right stage and allow him to wind up."

Earlier in the night White is also confident Baria will run well in the Ladbroke It! BM62 (1220m).

Baria hasn't been too far away in her past couple of runs and the trainer says she will run well again on Wednesday.

"She's in really good form, I gave her a bit of a break and I was rapt with her first-up run, she copped a little bit of interference just as they left the gates and she's come through that race really well and I expect her to be in the finish."

White is taking a team of four from his Brighton stables and is expecting both Elusive Princess and Four Letter Word will acquit themselves well in their respective races.

Looking for a little bit of value, I thought Enchanted Spy might be a nice each-way bet in the first on the card.

The rail is out 11m from the 1200m to the winning post and six metres for the remainder. Racing gets underway at 18.20 with the last of seven races at 21.30.

Duncan Dornuaf will live host coverage of all races on Tasracing TV.
