St Leger winner defies pedigree

3 minute read

Assaranca, unwanted by punters ($1.80 to $3.50) showed a brilliant turn of foot in the last 200m to win the Sporties Hotel Tasmanian St Leger over 2400m in dashing style in Launceston on Wednesday night.

The 5YO mare has surprised her trainer with her staying ability, but Barry Campbell was more than happy after the race.

"When we brought her in this prep, we didn't think she would get a mile and half but she wen close in the night cup (2100m), so we gave her a go in the (Launceston) cup, she went good in that and she's gone good tonight, she might be a stayer by Nicconi," Campbell said with a laugh.

Assaranca won by 2.25 lengths, Costero ran second with Miss Charlie Brown 1.25 lengths away third. The winner will now go for a well-earned spell.

Galenus puts it all together

Smart sprinter Galenus returned to form and landed some good bets winning the Ladbrokes Open Hcp (1200m).

Galenus and Julius staged a two-horse war over the final 250m with Galenus $8 into $3.60 scoring by a short head, Fivefingerdiscount was more than three lengths away third.

"The horse has been a little difficult at times, it was good to get a win tonight.

"Galenus took control at the 600m, I had to let him role because he's a horse you can't hold up otherwise, he throws his head but to my horses credit he dug deep and got to the line in front," winning jockey David Pires said after the race.

Pires also reported that all is well with The Inevitable who left for Melbourne late Wednesday night to contest the $5 million All Star Mile at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Pires will ride the little Tassie champ who is trying to stretch his winning sequence to seven after sweeping all before him over the Tasmanian Carnival.

Trinder treble

Early in the night Adam Trinder and Brendon Mccoull combined with the lightly raced 3YO Gallant Warriors in the Natalie Waters BM62.

Gallant Warriors raced just off the speed for most of the trip, but he sprinted quickly to win nicely from Under His Eye with Geegee Lucky Jess third.

"He's still a work in progress, he's very green, he's quite a timid sort of character, he's a three-year old but he's probably still 12 months away, where he gets to is up to him but he's heading in the right direction," Trinder said after the race.

That was the first leg of a double for the pair who later won with Chosen Eagle in the Robert Baffin Class 1 (1400m), while Trinder added a third winner courtesy of Incriminate in the night's final event.

Sisters surprise punters

Armidale Stud grabbed an early double with sisters Swoop There It Is and Swooping Eagle winning their respective races.

Both are by Alpine Eagle x Swooper, Swoop There It Is is a 3YO filly who was having her second start, Swooping Eagle is a 4YO mare who broke her maiden at start five.

Swoop There It Is is trained by Siggy Carr while John Blacker trains Swooping Eagle and the double snuck under the guard of most punters with an all-up of the pair paying in excess of $800 across most totes.

It was a great start to the program for Alpine Eagle progeny who won the first four races.
