Animal magnetism draws Austin to racing

3 minute read

FEATURED APPRENTICE: Austin Galati
BIRTHPLACE: Perth
AGE: 23
HOST TRAINER: Racing and Wagering Western Australia
CLAIM: 3kg

A career in racing was never a childhood dream for apprentice jockey Austin Galati but he knew he wanted to work with animals.

Now his favourite moments come from rewarding the quiet achievers in racing by bringing home a winner for them.

"I love working with the horses, I love the competitiveness and there's no better feeling than winning a race, especially for the smaller trainers who work so hard behind the scenes," Austin said.

"I never had any background in horse racing but I fell into the industry, starting off as a stable hand when I left school, and went on with it from there.

"I always wanted to work with animals and did plenty of hard yards to get to where I am now but it's all starting to pay off.

"I've loved my journey, even though times can be tough."

Austin has flourished in the latter stages of his apprenticeship and, as he looks forward to becoming a senior rider, says he has had some top-class role models.

"Spending time riding trackwork with Peter Hall really gave me a boost and that extra bit of riding confidence," he said.

"I like to follow the Rawillers. They all have a great style for how tall they are and are very good riders overall.

"My family and other jockeys and trainers have helped along the way, especially taking off to Broome for the season under Rob Gulberti.

"Paul and Carey Martin have been a huge help to me as well and I'm forever grateful for all their support."

When he's not riding, Austin says he spends time sleeping, walking his dogs and playing online games with mates.

Those relaxing leisure activities are a counterbalance to the high-octane world he joined when he started racing.

"I had my first couple of races in Pinjarra, both running second place. I was pretty nervous and excited at the same time but I've loved the game ever since," he said.

"Now I'm hoping to smash out as many grass winners as I can before my apprenticeship ends in July."
