FORMPLUS Staking Strategy: Devonport - Sunday, 21st May 2023

3 minute read

Sunday thoroughbred racing is on the synthetic in Devonport for a nine-race program.

Racecourse : Devonport (Australia)
Racecourse : Devonport (Australia)

The first event of the day is scheduled for 11:15.

R1 Goodstone Group Maiden, 1350m

Keen on the chances of Mira Flores (6). She ran well a week ago in Hobart behind Hewie in a strong maiden over the mile. Back in distance the only slight query. REWARD FOR ROSIE (8) the main danger. She caught the eye late behind Duncannon when resuming here from a lengthy absence. Blinkers go on first time and from the inside alley she should get every opportunity. Can't ignore the recent effort of MOORBOOZIE (4) who found the line well over this trip a fortnight ago behind No Access who has since held his own in a strong Class 1. MISS PRIVATE (12) had no luck at this track a month back and should have finished much closer on that occasion. PINANDI (7) likewise had little go right for her in the same race. RISIST CAPTURE (9), KREGLINGER (3) and SAKURA HIME (10) next best.

R2 Lending4u 2yo & 3yo Maiden, 1150m

Not a straight forward race. If Geegees Easyrider (6) can find the lead here she'll take some running down. Not much went right for her recently on resumption at Hobart. A big watch on the two-year-old debutants KIREINA MARUBRAH (11) and GOLDEN MEADOW (10) who have performed admirably at the trials and are both firmly in the mix. ALPINE VISTA (9) didn't meet market expectations first up finishing at the tail of the field but it's worth keeping a close watch on him as he did do plenty wrong that day and has been back to the trials since. SHE PLAYS GAMES (7) was given every hope here a fortnight ago but likely would've have taken some benefit. GENERAL ASSEMBLY (1) is an interesting first starter originally trained by Chris Waller. His two local trials for the new stable have been rock solid, market best guide.

R3 Ladbroke It! 2yo & 3yo Maiden, 1150m

Miss Chica Mala (6) was very good behind Adachi last weekend in Hobart and they put a space on the rest of the field. Provided she can handle the seven-day back up she is the one to beat. MISS PASHA (10) looms as the main threat having been very competitive against our best two-year-olds. Hasn't raced on the synthetic to date but did trial impressively here back in March. Must respect the debutant RED SPHERE (8) who has shown good ability at his three trials, the blinkers go on and has drawn ideally. No knock on the form of BELLASARIO (5) who has been racing consistently down south but two starts here for two unplaced runs is the negative. MISS KEEDS (9) and CAPTAIN CAM (1) best of the rest.

R4 Kevin Sharkie Maiden, 1009m

Lacerate (4) is yet to shake his maiden status after many attempts but appreciates the synthetic and gets his chance here in a moderate affair. There's some speed drawn underneath him so he probably sits just off them. FLIGHT READY (3) hasn't raced for over a year. Hasn't shown a lot on race day to date but his two recent trials have been encouraging. STARS IN THE NIGHT (12) and AUSSIE BLACK (1) are the likely leaders and are right in contention now that Husavik has been withdrawn. GOES LIKE THE WIND (7) gets back but will be hitting the line. He's some chance if they overdo it in front. The first emergency WESTERN TEARS (13) has gained a start and wasn't disgraced first up when she only faded late after being used up early. LITTLE SAL (9) is a newcomer to the state with ordinary mainland form, has trialled satisfactorily without raving.

R5 Tasmanian Horse Transport Mdn/cl1, 1880m

Puma (9) has been racing consistently around the state and thoroughly deserves to break through. Was only rolled late last week by Hewie over the mile in Hobart after shooting clear inside the final 200m. Worth noting also he did beat Galan home in that race. AFRICAN THUNDER (1) was good behind Jackjack over 1400m on the same day and gave every indication that stepping up today to the 1880m would suit even better. DOONICAN (3) should be thereabouts. He had no luck at all last outing and prior to that he finished on the heels of the placegetters in a similar standard race. HELLFIRE EAGLE (5) and CHI MAZEL (2) have some claims. Next best MISS PEBBLES (11) and UNNERVING (10).

R6 Great Northern Bm60 Hcp, 1650m

Six of the 11 runners come via the BM64 race won by Incriminate a fortnight ago. The best chances of those six are the placegetters Skilendra (1) and Alpine Blast (2). Have confidence around that form stacking up here and can't split them. GEE GEE SILENTNITE (11) is arguably in career best form down in Hobart. Different scenario today and a wide draw to contend with but his recent efforts are simply too good to ignore. ALPINE AVIATOR (4) is third up today on his home track and the mile suits. Next best DUTCH ACTION (9) but this a tougher race, EIGHT MARGARITAS (10) whose last start was too bad to be true and KAY OH ELL (6) who was heavily supported last start when first up, will benefit.

R7 In Series Electrical + Solar Bm64 Hcp, 1150m

Far Away Hit (11) had excuses last effort when she was badly hampered at the start. Came from last at the 600m and rattled home. From a perfect draw she gets her chance to rebound here. CORNELIAN BAY (2) won that race and only just got the job done but to his credit didn't have much room in the straight and responded when asked. NEED TO BE UNIQUE (1) has drawn off the track but the long run down the back isn't as daunting as it may seem. Blinkers are on again and back to the 1200m, he's fit and concede him some hope. GEEGEES HISWORD (5) resumes with no trials. His wins have been over 1400m and further but no surprise to see him closing off strongly. SEYDOUX (10) is flying but draws wide for a change and will need the breaks to go his way. TROJAN STORM (3) has returned in terrific form. Both SCHAUFFELE (8) and WOLF REIN (14) map to run well. Risking VETLANDA (4) from an awkward middle draw.

R8 Thai Imperial Class 1 Hcp, 1350m

Found this hard to sort out. Around half of these runners come via the Seydoux race a fortnight back and that looks as good a form reference as any as a starting point. The efforts of Turk Boy (2) Slipslopslap (4) and No Access (5) were on a par with each other finishing just behind the top two with little separating them. UPSET (11) contested the same race and never saw daylight until too late. Has some claims if he gains a start. MISIRLOU (7) has blinkers on again second up but would need to improve. DUNCANNON (1) won his maiden decisively. Not totally discounting him but this is a tougher task. Next best FURTHER SHE GOES (8) BYNANCE (9) and MIRROR ONE (3) are first four possibilities.

R9 Hope In A Suitcase Class 3 Hcp, 1350m

Like the way that Hot Relation (7) let down for his new stable on resumption two weeks back. He rounded up his rivals impressively and no reason he can't go on with it. The 1350m should suit even better. SUSHI EXPRESS (4) was held up at a vital stage last start. Arguably wins the race with clear running. SQUARE DONUT (2) comes through the same race and he didn't have enough room when he needed it. HERO OF ROMANI (5) has been off the scene for close to seven months but looks ready to fire coming off two solid trials. KING ISLAND (1) also resumes from a four month absence. He showed plenty of promise last campaign and expect he'll run well on the back of 2 recent trials. POWER MAGNUM (3) next best.
