Carr ready for travel

3 minute read

A trip to Melbourne is dependent on how two of Siggy Carr’s stable stars perform in their respective races in Hobart on Sunday.

Classy mare Queenborough Flyer is looking to return to form after an unplaced run at Flemington last month while up and comer Swoop There It Is may be her travelling companion if she does enough on Sunday to justify the trip.

Queenborough Flyer hasn't started since finishing second last down the Flemington straight on 20 May. She will line up in the Kevin Sharkie BM68 (1200m) on Sunday with 3kg apprentice Chloe Wells booked for the ride. The mare did underline her class during the Summer Racing Festival winning the Lady Lynnette Stakes over 1100m in January.

"A lot of debating about where to go with her, we were more than happy about how she went in Melbourne, she just got a bit lost going up the straight for the first time," Siggy Carr explained.

"We got her back home and thought we would run her down here and make sure her confidence and our confidence is back up.

"She travelled over and back really well and is healthy and well in herself, her track-work has been really good," Carr added.

"I'm the only one who's ever ridden her race day so I'm a little bit nervous, but Chloe has always ridden horses for me just how I want them and I have confidence in that."

Swoop There It Is resumes after a break from her initial campaign where she had four runs for a win and second.

"She was a little difficult to get going but when she got to the races the penny dropped.

"She's showing us glimpses that she is going to be a lovely mare. We've brought her back in because she does really well in the paddock, and we didn't want her to get too big on us.

"If she does run well there's a chance we might slip her over the water for a midweek 3YO fillies race before she turns four but that will all rely on how she runs on Sunday."

In all, Carr has around 20 horses in work and has nine entered for Sunday. She is still in a battle for the jockeys' premiership sitting equal second, four wins behind leader Brendon Mccoull but is lamenting a run of outs with her last winner 19 rides ago.

"I'm having one of those runs at the moment, I can't train one or ride one," she said with a laugh.

"I'm trying to stay positive and hope that the wheel turns quickly for me. Don't worry I'm trying."

With some jockeys still to be confirmed, at this stage Carr has only three rides for the meeting in the last three races with her best winning chance being Swoop There It Is in the final event.

Looking for some value, I thought Global Awareness could improve sharply on her first-up run a fortnight ago and be an each-way bet in the first race.

It's an early start again with the first of nine races at 11:28.
