Approaching 10 of the best for Liffey

3 minute read

Coming off arguably one of the best campaigns of his career, recent trials of rising 10-year-old Liffeybeau suggest there is plenty of good racing left in the tank.

The son of Magnus and Liffeybel has tuned-up for a first up tilt at the $45,000 open handicap (1009m) in Devonport next Wednesday with a pair of winning trials, the latest in very fast time.

"Both barrier trials have been very very good, at his latest trial he broke the 800m record," said trainer Michael Trinder referring to the Devonport trial on 6 June.

"The trial was indicative of how he's come back. He'll rise a lot in weight from what he carried in the barrier trial, Di Parish rode him at a light weight, and he'll go to the top of the weights in the actual race," added Trinder.

10 horses have nominated for the open handicap on the second of two midweek Devonport programs in June, including Devonport Cup runner-up Alpine Wolf, And Beyond who is unbeaten from two starts at the track and Julius who finished behind Liffeybeau when they ran the quinella in the Royal Rambo on Launceston Cup Day.

Sent out as a $31 chance in the Royal Rambo, the victory of Liffeybeau was just reward for a consistent campaign that included placings in the Goodwood Handicap and Ladbrokes Carpet Charge along with a fifth in the Listed Newmarket Handicap.

"Everything fell into place for him last campaign.

"All of his runs apart from one were very good and he was running against the highest level of horses in Tasmania," said the trainer.

Inducted into the Tasmanian Thoroughbred Hall of Fame in 2021, Trinder is admittedly in the twilight of his training career and may be represented by the majority of the four horses he has in work at next Wednesday's meeting.

"I've only got Right Hook, Spirited Toff and a young one along with Liffeybeau.

"Spirited Toff ran fifth (last start) and he probably has another win in him, and Right Hook was off the track all the way so you can forget his run," said the trainer with both horses nominated for a 0-62 over 1350m.
