Options left open for Alpine Wolf

Trainer Barry Campbell has multiple options on the table for Alpine Wolf’s second-up run following his track record return in Devonport on 21 June.

hile Barry Campbell is undecided on exactly where Alpine Wolf will have his next start, it seems certain to be next weekend on either 22 or 23 July.

"He will either run next Saturday at Caulfield in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes or the following day in Launceston in the 1400m (open handicap)," Campbell said.

The Hall of Fame trainer said that Alpine Wolf may accept for both races and if he were to head to Victoria, they wouldn't be doing so to make up the numbers.

"If it's too strong (the Bletchingly) and it doesn't look winnable we will run here, but we'll happily have a throw at the stumps if we think he can win."

After winning first-up over 1009m, Campbell isn't concerned about Alpine Wolf having his next start over 1400m if that arises, despite a month between runs.

"He went five and a half weeks from a 1400m to the Devonport Cup last campaign and was beaten in a photo, so the gap is no dramas."

Change of luck due on Sunday

Campbell will have three runners at his home track in Devonport on Sunday with two of them looking to overcome luckless last start performances.

Carneros was caught off the track from a wide barrier at his Tasmanian debut on 2 July, however there is unlikely to be a repeat after drawing the inside gate for Sunday's opening quaddie leg.

"I think connections thought he'd half reached his mark up in Queensland and a lot of the owners are in horses down here anyway.

"He's quite a nice horse, I think he's got a few tricks which we are still trying to uncover but it looks a nice race for him on Sunday."

Also wearing the Star Thoroughbred colours is Vetlanda who was blocked for a run at key stages last start and steps up slightly in distance to 1150m in a BM68.

"She's got good pace, barrier one is good for her, and I expect she will be in the mix."

Rounding out Campbell's runners is Myocardium in the final race of the day, and he looks a strong chance in a BM60 (1650m) after placing in similar class last time out. ''
