Lucky break for Thompson

3 minute read

Cressy trainer Cameron Thompson has enjoyed the highs and lows that racing can throw up in the space of just a few days.

Earlier in the week he was in hospital after a mishap at his home track and despite being advised not attend the Devonport meeting, he arrived on crutches and spent much of his day in a wheelchair but enjoyed the best type of pain relief by training three of the first four winners on the program.

"On Wednesday (I was) working the second last pair of the morning at our home farm and a young horse went over on me coming off the track and I've broken my ankle.

"I've had three screws inserted and I think I'll be out of action for three or four months," Cameron Thompson said after his third winner of the day.

Thompson began his winning ways with promising youngster Ian's Finale ($3.80 to $2.70 fav) winning at just his third start thanks to a lovely ride from a wide barrier by Hayley McCarthy.

"I don't really think he knows what he's doing, the way he pricked his ears and didn't really let down in the straight, but he is a lovely horse."

Next up Pop A Honda ($4.40 to $3.30) broke her maiden at start 15 thanks to a rail hugging ride from Chelsea Baker. The 4YO got shuffled back toward the tail approaching the home turn but dashed through a late gap to win narrowly from the heavily supported Mystic Hope who was $12 into $3.80 before starting at $6.

"He's been thereabouts, his mother (Pop A Lefty) was the first horse I ever trained to win so it's a bit sentimental and he got the bob at the right time."

Thompson's third winner was again courtesy of a gun ride, this time by Erica Byrne Burke aboard Sweetsop, his longest priced winner starting at $9.50.

"Sweetsop is just a good honest horse and she's comeback really well and is hitting the line really hard.

"They all rode them well; they have all been very supportive of us while we have had the stable going. Hayley has helped me out a lot and Chelsea has been great doing some trackwork so it was nice to see them get a result as well."

McCarthy and Byrne Burke went onto share riding honours for the day with winning doubles, McCarthy's second win was on the John Blacker-trained  Bellasario while Byrne Burke rode the most impressive winner of the day, Sharma's Last for her boss Adam Trinder.

Sharma's Last ($2.90 fav) kept his unbeaten first-up record intact when he rallied in the last 50m to overhaul track specialist Square Donut.

"I don't have any plans for him, just a winter prep and then focus on a Tasbred 4YO 1600m race in February," Trinder said.

Trinder also had a double, his promising mare Seydoux ($2.90 to $2.30 fav) dashed clear to win impressively in the 1150m BM68 to make it four wins from five starts since joining his Latrobe stable.
