Fairytale milestone on the cards for Holder, Macdonald

3 minute read

It would be a romantic end to Hall Of Fame trainer Leon Macdonald’s decorated career if Jason Holder can claim his 2000th career win at Morphettville on Saturday.

Leon Macdonald has three runners at his final day of metropolitan racing before retiring with 1276 wins and 11 Group 1 victories to his name.

Jason Holder will be in the saddle when his "boss" saddles up his final Morphettville runner when Hopon Harry steps out alongside stablemate Extra Time.

Racing Australia records show Holder sits on 1998 wins after guiding Rubini and Left Turn Clyde to victory at Murray Bridge on Wednesday.

Holder has ridden 275 winners for Macdonald during his time in the saddle and he still rues the Group 1 victory that alluded them after coming agonisingly close with Dalasan in the 2020 South Australian Derby.

"I've always wanted to win a Group 1 for Leon,'' Holder said.

"We came close in the Derby when Dalasan was beaten behind a star (Russian Camelot). We still talk about how unlucky we were to bump into a superstar at the time,'' he said.

Holder has seven rides at Morphettville with Hopon Harry set to be the last time he'll ride for "the boss".

Holder's rides:

R3 – Shez Betty $10
R4 – Badiss $34
R5 – Delightful Shecky $7
R6 – Chicago Bear $6.50
R7 – Hopon Harry $10 (Macdonald Racing)
R8 – Declared $16
R9 - Rising Legend $19
