In-form stable looking to continue winning run

3 minute read

With four winners from his last five starters, Hagley-based trainer Drew Tyson hopes his winning run can continue when he takes two runners to Sunday’s eight-race card in Devonport.

Mywordis resumes to the track in The Stakes At Spreyton M76 Hcp over 1350m.

The gelded son of Wordsmith hasn't been sighted since a Devonport win over 1880m in late April, which followed two disappointing efforts in Melbourne. However, trainer Drew Tyson explained there were a few excuses for those efforts.

"I thought he was right, but he kept getting hoof abscess, so we had to put concussion plates on to try and help, but in the end, it didn't.

"I probably should have put him back in the paddock and just got him right," explained the trainer.

Carrying the top weight of 59.5kg in Sunday's race, Tyson is happy with the gelding going into the race.

"He is doing everything right. He worked well on Wednesday, I had Jackson Radley ride him work the last couple of weeks hoping he could ride him on Sunday, but he is only allowed to ride in two races and is riding two for John (Blacker), so he is unable to," Tyson said.

"It is a tough race. I just hope I have done everything right on my end.

"Le Cadeau is a handy horse on his day, and Sharmas Last is just in a purple patch," the trainer explained.

Whatever happens on Sunday will determine what happens next for the campaign.

"If he comes out and wins, there aren't many races around for him, so we will discuss if we will go back to Melbourne or if we give him a few weeks out and wait for the carnival, but we will just get through Sunday before we look too far ahead.

The Tyson stable will also be represented in the final race of the day, the Tasmanian Horse Transport Class 2 over 1350m with African Thunder.

The gelded son of Alpine Eagle recorded his second career win over 1430m in Hobart on 11 June.

"It was a gutsy win in Hobart.

"He is a very immature horse, but he is a beautiful big striding horse that doesn't need anything going wrong in the race. If he gets held up, it breaks his stride, and then he has to wind up.

"He has kicked all the goals. I just want him more consistent," said Tyson, who acknowledged it was a tough race.

Well-bred 3YO to debut

The Adam Trinder-trained Defend The Island will make his race track debut in the second event on the program for the maidens over 1150m, and will do so on the back of a recent trial win.

The gelded son of Your Song is out of Group 3 winner Kats Clause and is a full relation Mister Songman (3YO Cup, 3YO Trophy and Randwick winner) and Rabbit Clause and is also a half-relation to Sir Simon, Lady Jane, Sir Joey, Miss Elizabeth and Tasmanian Guineas winner Mister John.

Defined The Island was purchased through an online auction in 2021 for $21,000.

Sunday's meeting commences at 12:20 pm and can be seen on TasracingTV and Sky Racing 1.

DRC to present 2022/23 Awards at race meeting

The Devonport Racing Club will present their awards for the season just concluded at Sunday's meeting.

Troy Baker defeated his partner Siggy Car in the Jockeys' title by one point, while Chelsea Baker and Erica Burnie-Burke dead-heated in the Apprentice's title.

John Blacker defeated Adam Trinder by 14 points in the trainer's award.

While the Blacker-trained stable mates battled out the horse of the year title, which saw
Alpine Blast defeated Blonde Suspect by three points.
