Gee Gees Me Boy scores on debut

3 minute read

Gee Gees Me Boy justified his short quote when scoring on debut in Hobart on Sunday in the Ladbrokes Owners Incentive 3YO Maiden over 1100m.

Sent out as the $3.10 chance, the Wordsmith gelding raced in the back half of the small field before sprinting home best to score by a half-head over Tigers On Top ($18) and Rowing Power ($3.50) in a time of 1m 07.62 on the soft five rated track.

The gelded son of Wordsmith is prepared at Brighton by Leon, Dean and Trent Wells, with Leon delighted with the win.

"I was happy with his effort.

"Brendon (McCoull) looked after him a bit, and he looked after himself a bit late," said Leon.

"He is a big boy and is going to be a nice horse six months down the track, I think," explained Leon.

The gelding is likely to have one more start before being aimed at some feature races later in the year.

"He seems to have pulled up well, and if everything stays alright with him through the week, I plan on running him again on Sunday and then have a short break and get him ready for the Three-Year-Old Cup," explained Leon.

Sunday's race was the first time Gee Gees Me Boy had been publicly seen since winning a trial in March.

"He went a bit shin sore after the trial, and we didn't want to risk anything as the boys (Dean and Trent) had done everything with him and had a good opinion of him.

"So we just put him straight away after the trial," said Leon.

The win was the first leg of a winning double for Mccoull, who had success later in the day aboard the Imogen Miller trained Adachi ($2.24 fav) in the Hobart United FC Class 1 Handicap over 1400m.

Top day for Pires and Keys

David Pires took riding honours at the meeting with a winning treble.

He rode the Tegan Keys trained Royal Scotch ($8.50) to victory in the 1400m Tasmanian Bloodstock Maiden.

His other winners included Cartoon Graveyard ($2.30 fav) and Londiani ($4.40), both who are now trained by John Keys, who ended the day with a training treble after the win of Sunset Gun ($16) in race six.
