Day of firsts for Jessie and the Fox

3 minute read

Father’s Day turned into a memorable day for young trainer Jessie Bazan who landed her career first win when Fashion Fox put up a strong performance to hold off all challengers in a slugging finish to the Kevin Sharkie Maiden (1600m) in Hobart on Sunday.

A Lightly raced 5YO, Fashion Fox started $3.70 after as much as $5.50 was bet and was racing for just the sixth time but had indicated a win wasn't far off with solid efforts at his past three runs.

JockeyTroy Baker grabbed the lead around the home turn and Fashion Fox despite looking vulnerable over the last 200m, fought on to win by a short head over Miss Pebbles ($15) who looks ready to win soon with Storm Giver a close third.

"He's really special this horse, he's homebred, third generation, he's owned by my in-laws, obviously its Father's Day today and Neil's mum (partner Neil Walsh) is in hospital at the moment with a broken shoulder and this will just make their day," an excited Jessie Bazan said after the race.

Bazan is working about nine horses at Brighton on a private training property formerly owned by Dudley Clarke where Fashion Fox will enjoy a well-earned break.

"I promised him the paddock, I promised him a nice big beautiful green grassed paddock where he can relax and pick a bit of grass."

Lutrell double

John Luttrell took out training honours with a double. He kicked off the day with first-starter Spinhof scoring an impressive win in the 1100m Ladbrokes Owners Incentive Maiden.  Spinhof ($4.60) made light work of his wide barrier to score a comfortable win.

"He's a really nice little horse, he's bombproof and I think he's got a bit of ability," Luttrell said.

"He might go out now, I'll have a chat to the owner, he might go to Devonport for one and then have a break and come back for some good races over the carnival."

Luttrell made it two for the day when he trained the quinella in the Tasmanian Bloodstock BM60 Hcp over 1200m. Move On Over ($7.50) fought off challengers all the way down the home straight to score in a photo from her stablemate Nev's Boy  who was specked from $41 into $31 with favourite Alvarinho third.

Move On Over gave Luttrell's apprentice Catherine Van Muster her second career win.

"She's been close for a few runs now, she's such a tough little horse, she just fights back, and I think with the weight off her today it just helped her," the 4kg claiming apprentice said after the race.

Sam sensational again

Tsunami Sam could be given the chance to tackle a race like the Newmarket Handicap after he scored a dazzling win in the Elwick Functions and Events Open Hcp (1200m).

Tsunami Sam (D.Pires) easily wins an open handicap in Hobart on 3 September.

Jockey David Pires had little hesitation in taking the heavily backed Tsunami Sam ($1.80 fav) straight to the front and the 5YO never looked like being beaten, winning by four lengths.

"A few times he's been a little bit slow out of the gates, he was good jumping last start, and he was good today, with no speed in the race I opted to go forward, he got some nice cheap sectionals early and when he can relax he's got that incredible finish," Pires said glowingly.

"I think he's got a lot of upside to him and if he keeps going through his classes like he is he deserves a shot a race like the Newmarket."

While Tsunami Sam was heavily backed, Monte Bianco landed the biggest plunge of the day when she took out the Ladbroke It BM64 over 1600m.

Monte Bianco ($6 into $2.80 favourite) scored easily after being given a peach of a ride by Daniel Ganderton.

Fly in jockey Anthony Darmanin was the leading jockey scoring a double aboard Spinhof and Blushed.
