Vegas Showgirl, the dam of legendary four-time Cox Plate winner Winx, has died at the age of 21.

Segenhoe Stud's Peter O'Brien on Sunday released the news on social media.

"The most beautiful of mares, Vegas Showgirl, passed away peacefully this morning," O'Brien posted on X.

"Multiple champion broodmare of Australia and the dam of the immortal Winx.

"Our hearts are broken, as are the Camilleri family who loved her dearly. The kind soft mare rests easily now."

Vegas Showgirl secured her place in breeding history by producing Winx as a second foal, the result of a visit to Street Cry.

Winx would go on to win 37 of 43 starts, 33 of them in a row before her retirement, including 25 Group 1 wins.

She was one of 10 named-foals for Vegas Showgirl, a daughter of Al Akbar and the Voodoo Rhythm mare Vegas Magic.

Vegas Showgirl's other Stakes winner is El Divino, who won a Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes at his second start.

Her two latest foals to race both won on debut, four-year-old Deep Impact mare City Of Lights at Geelong in June this year, while Time Of My Life – a daughter of I Am Invincible – won at the same track on September 15.

Vegas Showgirl's other named-foal yet to race is two-year-old Pride Of Dubai filly Taleitaki, who is in the care of Michael Freedman at Randwick.
