Tough act to follow

3 minute read

Thespian Waters showed he could be a force to be reckoned with in some of the feature 3YO races over the summer with a brilliant first-up win over 1100m in Hobart on Tuesday.

After three placings in his initial racing campaign, Thespian Waters ($7 – $5) sprinted sharply when heads turned for home to win impressively for trainer/rider Siggy Carr.

"So exciting, everyone knows the horse has got ability. We took him to the trials at Longford and he was a little bit plain, but I knew I had a little bit there to play with, he's still got to come on a little bit in the coat," Carr said.

"Now we know where we are going, I've got no doubt he will get 1400m to a mile without an issue at all, I think I pushed the button a little early at the top of the straight if I'd waited another couple of strides he would have won by more."

6YO Conundrum may be another Tuesday winner destined for better races, after showing his Launceston win was no fluke with another stirring finish to score narrowly in the Class 1 ( 1390m).

Appearing to be struggling around the home turn when leader Londiani shot away, Conundrum dug deep to get up in the last few strides and trainer Sarah Cotton said a Cup race over the summer might be his target.

"It is hard to go straight from a maiden to a class 1, but he's a big strong horse, he's only going to get further," Cotton said.

"He's hard work just because he's a big horse, he's bred to get 2100m, and you never know, it's a far-fetched thing, but he might make a Brighton Cup horse later on."

Smart decision

Young trainer Jessie Bazan pulled the right rein by running Capital Cheval ($4.80 – $6.50 ) in Hobart on Melbourne Cup Day, rather than Launceston the following night and chasing a Tasbred bonus.

Although the bonus is worth an extra $20,000, Capital Cheval had drawn barrier 13 in Launceston whereas he jumped from the inside gate in Hobart and was given a peach of a ride by Bulent Muhcu to race away and win by more than two lengths.

"He drew a really wide gate last time, and he does tend to over race if he doesn't find any cover, today (he was) drawn inside, so we opted to run even though we were forgoing the bonus in this one.

"Bulent did a great job of riding him, and he finished off really well," Bazan said."
