Just too quick

3 minute read

Speedster Quicken Up is likely to have her next start at Moonee Valley over 955m after she easily accounted for a smart field in a BM68 over 1100m in Launceston on Wednesday night.

Quicken Up, ($4) ridden by Erica Byrne Burke jumped well, went straight to the lead, and gave nothing else a chance dashing clear to win by 2.5 lengths.

"We will probably head that way, (to Moonee Valley) before she gets too high in the ratings, she's a 64, so she should get in alright with Erica's claim over there too," trainer Rowan Hamer said.

"She was really good, she jumped from the gates really nice, she's a quick mare she loves racing, and it would be good to go over there (Melbourne), Byrne Burke added.

Quicken Up has now raced 19 times for five wins and five minor placings, the win took her stake earnings past $100,000.

Byrne Burke later made it a double and took her career wins to 99 when Extreme Gem ($3.90 – $3.10) led throughout to win the 1200m class 2.

It was a carbon copy of her earlier winning ride, the apprentice rolled straight to the front, dictated the tempo and kicked clear around the home turn to set up a winning break.

Pure gold

One of the most impressive wins on the eight-race program was debutant Fighting For Gold ($4.40) who showed she has a bright future with a dazzling last 200m to win bounding away in the 1200m maiden.

The 4YO mare raced greenly for most of the trip, but once balanced up she rattled home to score impressively.

"(She was) all over the shop, travelled very patchy she was in out, left-right, forward-back, but once she got into the clear, I always knew she was going to do the job," jockey Daniel Ganderton said after the race.

"A really nice mare, she's taken a bit of time, and she's still putting it together, but she's got a good future."

Lots to love

Lovin' Bev ($4.40 – $3.20) made a one-act affair of the 1400m maiden, jumping to lead from a wide gate and dashing clear around the home turn to win by seven lengths eased down.

Trained and ridden by Siggy Carr, Lovin' Bev dashed home her last 600m in 34.45 seconds.

"I didn't realise how far in front I was at the top of the straight.

"Once we got to the front we got a nice breather, the horse is really fit and she's probably been looking for the 1400m she can sustain that tempo and I've got no doubt she will run a mile," Carr said.

Full marks for Darma

If trainer Stuart Gandy had any doubts about his mare Monte Fleur running a solid 2100m they were quickly quashed when she strolled home in a maiden/class 1.

"I think the ride was 10/10, first time over the trip, he must have been travelling pretty well, he popped out, and she was really strong through the line," Gandy said.

Monte Fleur ($6.50 – $4.40) was ridden by Anthony Darmanin who continues to lead the premiership race. Monte Fleur has raced just nine times and has now won twice and been placed on three occasions.

Gandy went on to make it a double for the night when Geegeeluckystar ($5.00 – $3.20) won narrowly in the 1400m BM60.
