Delcredere seeks to follow up on an emotional win, heads to TAB Finals Day

3 minute read

Mount Gambier trainer Rob Lepley is hoping promising four-year-old Delcredere can put some more quality on the pedigree page of his full-sister when he tackles the $105,000 Riziz Series Final (1100m) at Morphettville on TAB Finals Day this Saturday.

Rob Lepley will sell a full-brother to Delcredere and his Listed class winning full-brother Noname Lane at next year's Inglis Yearling Sale in Melbourne.

It was his connection with the family that led him to buying Declredere's mother Sovereign Charm.

"I had a mare called Cosmic Charm a few years ago and she was a half relation to him,'' Lepley said.

"She was pretty handy too but never really went on, she had plenty of issues. I'd seen her mother go online in a digital sale, in foal to Shamus Award.

"I thought she would make a bit of money, we thought she'd make $10,000 and ended up paying $1600 for her.

"When we got her home, Noname Lane took off and I thought "we're on to something here", he said.

There is plenty of sentiment with Delcredere, the sole horse Lepley puts the polish on, his mother passing away the day before he broke his maiden with a dazzling seven and half-length Mount Gambier win back in October.

"Unfortunately she died the day before he won his maiden, she was back at Rosemont (Stud) to go to Shamus again and got colic,'' Lepley said.

"We can't complain, we only paid $1600 for her.

"I've got a two-year-old by Barbados and a yearling by Shamus who will be in the Inglis Premier Sale in March,'' he said.

Win, lose or draw there is no doubt the best remains in front of Delcredere and Lepley's confidence was bolstered knowing leading jockey Jason Holder wanted to stay with the horse this weekend.

"I wasn't sure he'd ride him,'' Lepley said.

"He won another heat after he won on our horse and I thought he might stick with that one, so that's encouraging.

"When he settles down, I think he's going to be pretty smart, there is no doubt he's got ability, he's just a bit dopey.

"I'm just trying to educate him along the way,'' he said.
