Ms Tasmania title shot

3 minute read

Impressive trial winner Ms Tasmania has the chance to be crowned this seasons first 2yo winner when she steps out in the opening race in Hobart on Sunday.

Ms Tasmania caught the eye of trial watchers in Launceston on 3 November, winning by more than two lengths and clocking 46.51 seconds for the 800m trip.

The filly is an all female affair, she is raced by a syndicate of 18 women and is trained at Brighton by Siggy Carr.

"Very exciting, its my first female only owned filly, she's got some good connections and lets hope she can get the job done," Carr said.

"I was at the Tasmanian yearling sales and I'd just purchased an Alpine Eagle filly and I had reached my budget, I was then approached by a lady who was interested in putting a female syndicate together and she asked if I could I pick out a yearling. I was a real fan of this filly, she had just been passed-in but we managed to secure her."

The only male connection to Ms Tasmania will be Carr's partner Troy Baker who rode her in the Launceston trial and has the mount again on Sunday.

"Once Troy got on her I couldn't get him off," Carr said with a laugh.

A field of six has accepted for the 2yo event, four of the six are fillies and four of the six have won a trial leading into Sunday's race.

Carr will also saddle-up a first starter in the 1100m Maiden, 4yo mare Golden Sweet Heart will debut off the back of a recent trial win.

"We're excited to get her to the races, she's had a few little issues so we have been very patient with her but we expect her run a good race first-up."

Pennine, who has been placed at her past three starts will represent the stable in the 2100m Maiden/Class 1 and Carr is confident about his chances.

"I didn't ride him great last start I probably got a little too far out of his ground, Erica (Byrne Burke) had been riding him, sadly she got  injured just before the race and I picked up the ride but I'm happy to have her back on board, the horse is going well and he's really got his hoof on the til that's for sure."

Carr will round out her day with Gee Gee Queen Bee in an 1100m BM 60. She comes off an unlucky unplaced run at Moonee Valley last start and although she doesn't race as well in Hobart as she does elsewhere, she looks to be one  of the leading contenders.

Carr will be restricted to training duties on Sunday, she is serving a one week suspension for a careless riding charge at the Launceston meeting on 11 November.

My best bet for the day is Better Than Banksy in race four. He rattled home from last in fastest 600m of the night in Launceston last week and only has to bring that form into Sundays race to be hard to beat.

First race is 13.22, the last of eight at 17.35. Brennan Ryan will live host the coverage for TasracingTV.
