Gluyas looking to continue hot start to first season in charge

3 minute read

Andrew Gluyas will be out to build on an impressive start to his first season solo since the retirement of his co-trainer and father-in-law Leon Macdonald at Morphettville on the Parks this Saturday.

Andrew Gluyas claimed the Rebel Raider Final with promising filly Walk Like An Angel last weekend on TAB Finals Day and currently sits fifth on the South Australian Trainer's Premiership with 14 wins, just one victory behind the Phillip Stokes and Michael Hickmott stables.

He was set to saddle up two favourites early on Saturday but is left with just one in the form of last-start winner Arugamama after being forced to scratch Lights Of Broadway on Friday morning.

"Unfortunately I've had to scratch her (Lights Of Broadway),'' Gluyas said.

"It's nothing serious but she just didn't present that well this morning, she's probably had enough of this campaign,'' he said.

Gluyas said talented four-year-old mare Arugamama could be aimed at some better races if she can make successive wins on the Morphettville Parks circuit after she was dominant last time out when ridden forward from a sticky gate and leading throughout.

"It was a nice win last start over the 1950m,'' Gluyas said.

"She'd been getting back and running on well, that form was around some handy horses, but it was good to see her take up a position and get it done like she did last start.

"She's had some racing now, we'll get through Saturday and review where we at. We could back off and then look at some of the staying races leading up to the Adelaide Cup,'' he said.

The stable head to Clare on Sunday chasing Cup success with Wheels, a mare who tackled the Adelaide Cup earlier in the year and looks ready to peak at her fourth run back from a spell and drawn a perfect barrier.

"She's a horse who didn't run badly last start,'' Gluyas said.

"She's drawn a good barrier and it does look a nice race for her,'' he said.
