Roxie is Jessie’s girl

3 minute read

Young trainer Jessie Bazan has only one of her team racing in Launceston on Wednesday night, but it’s a filly who made a huge impression, winning in Hobart on 11 November, scoring by three lengths and setting a new track record for the 1000m.

Anyways Roxie will contest an 1100m class 1. She has drawn gate 10 but may start from as low as barrier six if the emergencies don't get a run.

"We've opted to go for the safe option taking her to a class 1, we did put in a nomination for the 3YO Cup, but it was a super strong race so we're just going to let her go through her grades at the moment," Jessie Bazan said.

"I'm hoping a few of the emergencies don't get a run, so we come in a little bit, but she still should be ultra-competitive, I would think.

"Not a perfect barrier. She'll go forward, she's got a nice ground covering action, and we don't want to restrain her too much."

"I think she learned a lot from her last start; Troy Baker will make a decision, so we will leave it up to him to see how she jumps, but she is more than capable of rolling along."

Bazan is enjoying a great start to her training career with five winners so far this season at almost 22%, four of those winners have come from her past eight starters.

"I'm really blessed. I'm under no illusions that most people don't kick off their careers like that, but I'm just really lucky to have the support of some great owners.

"Neil (Walsh) managed to buy me a couple of nice horses to kick off with, so I'm lucky to have the stock and lucky to have the support."

Bazan has around 15 horses in work at her private training complex near Brighton.

"It's a beautiful place, quiet and serene. The horses have all got individual paddocks where they can get out and about, run around, and just do their own thing.

'We've got a lot of young ones, it's a nice number to roll with on my own, a lot of full  paddocks and a lot of hard work."

The top-rated race on the card Wednesday night, is an 1100m BM76 which has attracted a small but competitive field with promising gallopers Muscle Up,  Queenborough Flyer and Ole Ola resuming. They will be up against the Stuart Gandy-trained Geegees Gemstone, who is hard and fit and has been impressive at his past two runs, winning both.

I'm looking for a bit of value to start the night with Ella Dulcie an each-way special in the first race of the night. The 3YO has been unplaced at her only two starts, but both have been much better runs than they appear on paper.

The first of eight races on Wednesday night is at 17:44, with Duncan Dornauf hosting the TasracingTV coverage.
