Jordan hitting the right note

3 minute read

If Codi Jordan was a hit record, she would have a bullet beside her name as she shoots toward the top of the charts.

As it is, the young hoop is rocketing toward the top of the Tasmanian Jockeys' Premiership, sitting second but with the leader in her sights.

Codi Jordan is certainly 'on song' at the moment, having ridden a staggering 16 winners from her past 50 rides to have 26 for the season.

"Very happy and very grateful for all the support around me and very lucky to get the rides on these good horses, especially in the feature races," Jordan said.

Two of those 16 wins have been aboard First Accused, firstly in the Newmarket Hcp (1200m) in late November and then the Tasmanian Stakes (1600m) in Hobart last Friday.

Jordan returned home to Tasmania after trying her luck in Victoria and South Australia last year, and despite a slow start, she is now full of confidence and riding like she was when she won the Tassie title as an apprentice in 2021/22, emulating the feat of Bev Buckingham some 40 years earlier.

"I left Adelaide probably a bit rocky, but I'm definitely glad I did it.

"Victoria started off alright. I had a few wins early, but then it dwindled out; I had a crack at Adelaide and never really got my foot in the door, but the experience was all worth it, but I definitely knew when it was time to come back.

"It's a different kettle of fish over there. The competition is a lot harder, and there's a lot more jockeys you have to compete with.

"I've gone into my senior time now; I spent my first day as a senior jockey on King Island and rode three winners and to go back home and ride a winner in a Stakes race and to get those rides as a senior, especially from Glenn (Stevenson) has been huge.

"I think I'm off to a good start as a senior, and hopefully, the carnival can keep going the way it's going."

The Listed $125,000 Ladbrokes Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) and the $50,000 Kevin Sharkie Alexandra Plate for 2YO's (1000m) highlight the twilight card and while Jordan doesn't have a ride in either of the feature races on Friday, she will still be busy and has a chance to add to her winning tally with rides on in-form gallopers Luvher in race 3, Shooting North in race 8 and Geegee Lucky Jess in the last.

My best bets start Lovin' Bev (race 4 – 3). This mare is low flying at the moment, and Charlie Bucket (race 7 – 2) is lightly raced but full of potential. Both will be favourites, but both look likely to continue their winning form.

Full coverage of the meeting, which gets underway 14:14, will be provided on TasracingTV by Matt Reid and Richard Robinson.
