Olive a girl going places

Olive Girl got punters off on the right note in Hobart on Friday afternoon when she took out the Alexandra Plate (1000m) for 2YOs.

After a solid first-up placing in late November, Olive Girl ($2.10 – $1.45) was heavily backed after pre-post favourite Geegees Mistruth was scratched on the morning of the race.

Olive Girl sat outside the leader, Geegee Legacy ($4.60); they paired off to the turn before Olive Girl raced clear in the closing stages.

"We brought her here last Saturday and galloped her, and she worked really well, so we expected her to let down in the straight like she did today," trainer Stephen Shaw said.

"We will go to the Elwick Stakes if she pulls up well and go on from there and take it race to race."

Brilliant Bev is too good again

Lovin' Bev continued her winning ways, bringing up a hat-trick with another all-the-way win in the Fillies and Mares BM64 (1400m).

Trainer Siggy Carr is unsure where to next for her exciting 4YO but is considering giving her a try at 1600m.

"We will find something else for her; probably down the track, we could look at a mile 4YO race, but plenty of options are coming up for her, and she's just thriving."

Lovin' Bev ($1.30) gave nothing else a chance in the run, scoring by 2.5 lengths, taking her cumulative winning margin for her past three starts to almost 14 lengths.

Punters were well on target, with five favourites winning on the nine-race card, and only one winner, Es And Es ($13), started double figures.

Racing heads to the north-west next Wednesday with the $125,000 Ladbrokes Devonport Cup and $109,000 Ladbrokes Carpet Charge the features, then next Friday racing is back under lights in Launceston.

The next Hobart meeting on 21 January is a beauty featuring the $125,000 Elwick Stakes for 2YOs, the $100,000 Summer Cup, the $75,000 Blackflash, the $75,000 Thousand Guineas for 3YO fillies and the $50,000 Lady Lynette for fillies and mares.
