Dunn & Bishop taking the cavalry to Port Lincoln's midweek race meet

3 minute read

John Dunn and Krystal Bishop are entering uncharted waters with no short of 26 runners when midweek racing returns to Port Lincoln on Wednesday.

The stable have 32 of the 107 acceptances but will be left with more then a quarter of the starters if emergencies don't gain a start.

"We had 21 or 22 the other day but this is the most we've had,'' Dunn said.

"We've got some extra staff coming over, Krystal will be here, we couldn't do it without good staff,'' he said.

The stable are currently positioned third on the South Australian Trainer's Premiership in season 2023-24 with 20 wins - all coming on the provincial circuit at Port Lincoln – and one more than the figure they achieved last season.

They enjoyed a big end to 2023 with 10 winners from 83 runners in December.

"It's been good. We've started better then I probably expected but that's what the owners send us horses for,'' Dunn said.

"I've been bringing horses to Port Lincoln off and on for 25 years now, the last eight or 10 years we've started coming a lot more often and since Krystal and I started the partnership we've really grown numbers.

"It's numbers and buying the right type of horses.

"We like to buy horses who race anywhere from 1000m to 1400m and maidens who can work through their classes,'' he said.

The stable also took plenty of joy from seeing their promising apprentice Rochelle Milnes land her first metropolitan winner aboard Second To Nun at Gawler last weekend.

"That was brilliant!'' Dunn said.

"She's an absolute jet of a rider. I've had apprentices' ever since I started training, but she'd be the best I've had by a long way.

"She's a naturally gifted rider,'' he said.
