Quality mare Jaja Chaboogie rattled home to win the second edition of the $109,000 Ladbrokes Carpet Charge (1009m) in Devonport on Wednesday, running down leader Tony Nicconi ($14) with Galenus ($6.50) third.

Jaja Chaboogie, trained by Julie Richards and raced by her family, proved her class by winning the Group 3 Vamos Stakes (1400m) last year, and started at $17 despite a gallant second in the Newmarket Hcp (1200m) two starts back.

The 7YO has now won almost $350,000 in prizemoney for her owners. Winning jockey Troy Baker was full of praise for the mare.

"She ran huge in the Newmarket, and in the Conquering, that storm came, and I almost pulled her up out of the race.

"Great job by the Richards. Thanks to the family for putting me back on her," Baker said.

"I drew outside; I was happy to sit three-deep with cover, the track can get a bit of kick-back, I waited 'til we straightened to push the button. They had a big head start, but this horse is a Group 3 winner, and on her day, she is the best horse in the field."

Jaja Chaboogie came from second last around the turn to win by .75 of a length. She is now likely to go on and contest the other fillies and mares features during the Summer Racing Festival, including the Mystic Journey (1200m) in Hobart, and then defend her Vamos title (1400m) in Launceston.

EBB back riding winners

After a minor run of outs (19 rides), leading apprentice Erica Byrne Burke was back to her home track and back in form with an early double on Cup Day.

Byrne Burke landed Ralph The Rocket ($5.50) a winner in the first division of the 1350m maiden, a pick-up ride after Hannah Le Blanc was injured in a barrier mishap prior to race one.

"Unfortunately, Hannah hurt herself, and it was nice to jump on; he jumped aw

ay nicely and travelled through the run, I was going to come out wide, but it wasn't happening for me, so I ducked back in, and he chased the leader really nicely," Byrne Burke said..

The young rider completed an early double when Victorian Filly Buddong ($3.50 – $2.90) put in a last-to-first performance in the 1880m maiden/class 1 at just her second start. The filly is now likely to head to the Oaks a little later in the Summer Racing Festival.

Buddong had raced just once before Wednesday, finishing third in a (1590m) maiden at Wangaratta last month.

John Blacker was also in the winners stall twice early in the meeting, he followed up Ralph The Rocket's win with an all-the-way victory with the well supported Champagne Cinders ($5 – $3.70) in the 0-62 (1009m).

From barrier one, Troy Baker took the mare straight to the front and she never looked like being beaten, scoring from Bold Interest ($2.00 – $2.70) with Sweetsop ($7) finishing third. Baker went onto ride two more winners, Jaja Chaboogie in the Carpet Charge and Gee Gee Plane in the (1150m) BM66 Hcp.

There was a delayed start to the meeting when Alpine Vista broke through the barrier and damaged the running rail in two places prior to the first race. Eventually, the race got underway, but not before four horses had been declared late scratchings, leaving a field of just six.

Punters were unperturbed, with the well-supported Miss Keeds ($1.60) ridden by Craig Newitt leading throughout to win after the filly had been runner-up at her previous three outings.

Glenn Stevenson took training honours for the day, while Troy Baker was the leading jockey.
