Despite having raced well at Flemington previously, It’s Kind Of Magic will run down the straight for the first time.

Trainer Tom Dabernig was surprised to learn that It's Kind Of Magic had not raced on the Flemington straight course in her 32-start career. 

Now a seven-year-old, It's Kind Of Magic first raced at Flemington at her third start when unlucky at Stakes level during the 2019 Melbourne Cup Carnival. 

That was over 1400m, and the mare's only other appearance at the home of the Melbourne Cup was also over that trip in May 2022. 

Dabernig has It's Kind Of Magic engaged in the Black Caviar Lightning Race Day, 17 February (1100m) on Saturday. 

"It's her first time down the straight which surprises me," Dabernig said. 

"When Brent Stanley had her, she raced at Flemington but that was over 1400 metres." 

Dabernig held high hopes for It's Kind Of Magic when she raced at Moonee Valley two starts back, but left the track on December 23 scratching his head. 

That performance came on the back of a second at Geelong in October before successive wins at Dunkeld and Warrnambool. 

Since the Moonee Valley effort, It's Kind Of Magic has finished sixth to Va Via in the Listed Black Pearl Stakes (1200m) at Geelong on January 6. 

"She raced back into form this preparation with a second and two wins, but the Moonee Valley run, she was a bit off, for whatever reason," Dabernig said. 

"We couldn't find anything wrong with her and then she ran pretty well at Geelong in not a bad race. 

"That was 1200 metres. We hit the front and then we were swamped, and I think we were only beaten three-quarters-of-a-length off running third. 

"The idea was to try and get the 'Black Type' placing. 

"She's very fit. She was winning at 1000, then we went to the 1000 again and found it a bit sharp, then at the 1200 metres, she found it a bit far, so hopefully the 1100 on Saturday is her sweet spot."
