Weekend Wrap: Opperman outrides his claim, Collett continues hot form

3 minute read

JACOB Opperman completed a week of celebrations for the Racing SA Apprentice Academy by outriding his metropolitan claim at Morphettville on Saturday.

Opperman combined with the Andrew Bobbin-trained Thailess to bring up his 80th metropolitan winner to follow on from his Runner-up Dux Award at the Racing SA Apprentice Academy Awards on Monday night.

It was another huge day in the saddle for in-form apprentice Maggie Collett who produced a winning treble from just three rides.

Collett combining with the Will Clarken and Niki O'Shea-trained Toast The Deel, Rising Legend for Chris Bieg before producing a perfectly timed run to get Dual Fuel home in the last stride in the last race of the day for the Peter Hardacre stable.

"We meant to go forward and she just stood in the gates,'' Collett said.

"I was back last three wide, about 10 wide on the home turn, she probably covered about 2500m but she was good enough late.

"She's really tough and I think she'll get further,'' she said.

Brittney Wong was successful aboard France's Boy for the John Hickmott and Carrian Riggs stable while Nichola Yuen partnered Willybeafactor to a deserving win for the George Dimitropoulos stable.

AT Ceduna on Saturday Ivy Lam landed the first win of her riding career aboard Diamonds Are in the Ceduna Cup.

Garret Lynch and jockey Sairyn Fawke bookending the meeting winning the opening race with Devine Assassin before Jamcra scored an effortless 6.4 length win in the last.

Rochelle Milnes continued her stunning form in combination with the Will Clarken and Niki O'Shea-trained Second To Nun to win Friday's rescheduled Strathalbyn Cup.

Second To Nun now unbeaten in four starts with Milnes in the saddle.

"The moment she left the gates she felt so good,'' Milnes said.

"She's never let me down, she's a wonderful horse,'' she said.
