Gem to continue stable streak

3 minute read

Gandy unveils another impressive 2YO.

Brighton trainer Stuart Gandy hopes his successful run during the Summer Racing Festival can continue in Launceston on Wednesday night.

Gandy will take a team of just four, including the highly credentialed first-starter Gems Eagle in the opening race, a 2YO maiden over 1120m.

Gems Eagle has trialled twice for a narrow second and an impressive win.

"He's a really nice horse, beautiful type with a heap of ability.

"He's trialled up really well, and I'm really happy with him, and I think it will be a nice kick-off for him," Gandy predicted.

By Alpine Eagle x Galeocerdo, Gems Eagle has breeding on his side.

"She was a handy horse herself with heaps of speed and she's had Needs Sugar a listed winner, this bloke has taken a little bit of time and he will get better and better as most Alpine Eagles' do."

Gandy has another first starter in the race, Geegees Warofwords who he says "goes better than she has trialled."

Later in the night, Gandy will be represented by Gee Gee Als Prince in the 1220m BM68 and Geegees Hisword in the 2150m BM76, and rates them both as winning chances.

His stable stars are currently having a spell. 2YO Geegees Mistruth who took all before her winning four races from four starts including the Elwick Stakes in Hobart and Gold Sovereign Stakes in Launceston, alongside Geegees Gemstone who bounced back after a couple of unlucky runs with an emphatic win in the Royal Rambo in Launceston last Wednesday.

"They will both have a break now, and we will just assess where we go and what we do.

"Look, if they come back (during winter), it would probably be to go to the mainland; otherwise, Gemstone will get ready for the Newmarket and Mistruth, well anything is possible with her; we will just see how she goes in the next few weeks in the paddock.

"She is just untapped; she just has raw ability, a beautiful filly who can run time, and I'm not sure how far she will go or where she will finish up."

It's a big nine-race card getting underway at 17.36. Matt Reid will host all the action on TasracingTV.

Duncan Dornauf will be in the broadcast box. My best bets are Navy Street in race 3 and Nicco the Greek in race 7.
