Shane van Gisbergen has maintained his perfect 2021 season form, winning the Tasmanian leg of the Supercar championships at Symmons Plains Raceway.

Van Gisbergen is now six-from-six in this year's competition, cruising to victory by 4.77 seconds ahead of Jamie Whincup in second.

The Red Bull Ampol driver notched his 46th career win and although briefly losing his lead off the start, took just 13 laps to leapfrog Whincup and Cameron Waters then never looked back.

"Yeah, it was a bad one (start) and then Jamie pulled a nice move and got me," van Gisbergen said.

"But I did some big bombs at the end of the straight and got them back.

"It was fun racing at the start and then just trying to build a gap so we could manage it (the car).

"But it burnt up our rears which puts us in a bit of a spot for tomorrow but our car is awesome and it's really cool to be a part of it."

Cameron Waters had fans questioning whether an upset was on the cards early, but van Gisbergen bided his time utilising a mid-race pit stop strategy to stay clear.

He remains the favourite to see out another undefeated weekend when race seven kicks off on Sunday at 4.25pm (AEST).

Earlier, van Gisbergen secured his fourth poll position from six attempts this year, breaking the qualifying lap time record in the process.

Round three of the 2021 championship saw a newly implemented qualifying format, with the field split into two for each qualifying session and the top eight from each moving on to part two before battling it out for the top 10 spots.

In chilly but sunny conditions near Launceston, it was van Gisbergen who edged Ford's Cameron Waters by a third of a second in the final qualifying for the Tasmania SuperSprint.

After Saturday's result van Gisbergen sits 203 points clear of teammate Whincup on the competition ladder.
