Sydney Specials: Randwick (K) - 17th August 2019

3 minute read

While last Saturday gave us a little taste of what was to come in the Spring, on paper it's hard to be overly enthused about the weekend.

Unfortunately it is the off-week in the lead up to the Winx Stakes, however there are a few horses that create a bit of interest.

In the final event the Waterhouse and Bott trained Mister Songman kicks off his Epsom campaign and while some may question the sheer notion of that, his last start win suggests a berth in that race is well within reach.

Rock solid in his first two starts for the new yard, Mister Songman proceeded to gap his rivals at Randwick, saluting by 7L over 1400m.

Not only visually impressive, he also gave the clock a good starting and a beating.

Returning a Timeform rating of 110, he is already fringing on Group 3 standard and appears very well placed in his return.

Off a lengthy break (231 days), he has had bone chips removed from both front fetlocks and all appears in good order following his latest trial at Gosford.

The blinkers made all the difference at his last start and they stay on this weekend.

The wide draw is some concern, admittedly I usually like speed horses drawn wide, however whichever way you slice it and dice it, he looks likely to sit wide throughout.

As a result we are getting 2-1 about his chances, had he drawn well I think he is close to odds-on.

No question he has his rivals covered on talent and with even luck he should be too good.

The Chris Waller trained So You Win returns off a short break (49 days) and appears well set up in the Premier's Cup Prelude.

In career best form, So You Win went down narrowly last start, however confident he wasn't overly comfortable on the wet track and looks much better suited on Saturday.

Lining up off a nice soft trial, James McDonald legs aboard and should get a lovely run from the inside draw.

Will need a touch of luck in the straight, but with any clear air, he should prove very hard to hold out.
