Yabadabadoo comes tumbling down at right time

3 minute read

Yabadabadoo came tumbling down with a rumbling finish to roll favourite Elite Power and make it a training treble for trainer Michael Clements on Sunday.

The Zimbabwean-born conditioner may be in Australia, but the yard under the helm of assistant-trainer Michael White fired on all cylinders at that Queen Elizabeth II Cup meeting with Real Success (see earlier report), Vittoria Perfetta and finally the back-in-form Yabadabadoo in the $85,000 Fatkid 2011 Stakes, Class 2 race over 1400m.

The Makfi five-year-old has not greeted the judge since the last of his previous four wins which occurred in a Class 4 race over 1200m on April 14

His subsequent outings at higher grade in Class 2 and 3 were not without merit, but the game chestnut has finally cracked it for a well-deserved win at that level courtesy of a perfectly timed ride by former two-time Singapore champion apprentice jockey Wong Chin Chuen.

At the 300m, the forecourt crowd made up mostly of the Elite Performance Stable fans erupted as Vlad Duric drove Elite Power to what looked like an impregnable lead, but Wong had bided his time and yet to light up the fuse.

The two-length gap looked an untenable distance to make up at the 150m, but Yabadabadoo  ($61) did not shirk the task at hand when given the office.

A heart-stopping nose victory was the ultimate reward for Clements and owner Joe Giovanni, but unfortunately, heartbreak for the Elite band.

Webster (Chin Chee Seng) ran third another 2 ½ lengths away. The winning time was 1min 21.7secs for the 1400m on the Long Course.

White was pleased with the day's big haul, describing Yabadabadoo's return to the winner's circle as "well deserved".

"Credit to the horse. His last win came six months ago and we've been running him in those Class 3 races over 1200m," said the Australian horseman.

"But we've stuck at him and he's been running well of late. I wasn't sure if we got beat but the results went our way, which was great."

While it was win No 5 for Yabadabadoo, it was beginner's luck for Wong on him.

"It's my first time riding him. He's been knocking on the door and running good races," said the Malaysian jockey.

"I probably got on at the right time, the light weight also helped. It was pretty close, I wasn't sure if we won, but luckily we won."

With that latest success, Yabadabadoo's stakes earnings have now tipped over the $300,000 mark for Singh.
