Best From The West: Ascot - 21st December 2019

After last week’s meeting being off there are ten on this Saturday.

The big race is the Group 2 Ted Van Heemst at WFA in the lead up to the Perth Cup.

In the small field, it could well be a trot and canter for a fair way and those giving away a couple of lengths will have to sprint fast.

For that reason we reckon Gatting is the one to beat. He's been contesting all the main races around the carnivals and is still giving plenty.

Jamie Kah is back on and she was the one to get his biggest win in the Group 1 Makybe Diva back in September.

No doubt he meets good horses here but you'd think the Perth Cup at handicap level would suit a few more than this.

The following race is the Starstruck Classic and there is a little value in the shape of Snowchino.

She is well suited out to the mile now coming off some excellent efforts in the two mare lead up races.

Leading and just fading late in the Jungle Mist, she did similar in the Jungle Dawn but finished much closer.

Now out to the right trip for her, she might just be able to control this and being fitter, get going earlier. She's worth a gamble both totes.

Ted Van Heemst Stakes (G2)

Age: 3yo and up Type: OPEN

Group 1 Railway Stakes winner two starts back, Regal Power powered clear over the last 150m to continue a purple patch of form, his sixth win and fifth stakes success. He settled fifth in the small field of six with a circuit to run and found a lovely one out and one back spot from the 1400m. Inside the 1000m he cruised and then responded when the tempo increased at the 600m, in behind the first two, ready to pounce. Jockey William Pike eased him wider turning in then unleashed at the 200m, bounded clear and won under a hold by two and a quarter lengths. Gatting sat outside the leader down the side and into the straight before leading briefly at the 250m. He had no answer to the winner yet bravely kept on to the line. Star Exhibit tracked the winner in fifth to the last corner, moved out at the 250m and stayed on quite well for third from Mississippi Delta who battled away for fourth.
