The Melbourne Mail: Flemington - 21st December 2019

We back up with another good summer card at Flemington this weekend where Patrick Payne looks to saddle a strong team.

A strike-rate of 22% across his last 250 runners shows Payne to be one of the best stables around, and The Melbourne Mail fancies him to build on that impressive record on Saturday with several key runners lining up.

They include out play of the day, D'Aguilar , who is set to be sent out favourite in the fourth race on the card after warming up nicely at his first run for the Payne yard last time.

He was more than a year between runs there, having won two starts for Darren Weir and posting a promising figure before the break, and he looks every chance to go on with that in his new surrounds having crushed the line first up, reeling off splits that said he was the best horse in the race.

Fitter for that, and out to 1400m which looks sure to suit, he makes a stack of appeal on Saturday around the 2-1 mark.

We'll be hoping the stable are going into the fourth hot. The race prior they saddle another second up runner who looks set to make sharp improvement in Whenever Wherever.

Whenever Wherever didn't have a lot of room when he needed it first up, but like our play of the day, he ran closing splits last time that hint at him being back in terrific order, and the straight course, with a real 'get the job done' kinda jock switching aboard both look ticks.

He should be able to travel within striking distance of the speed and his closing burst makes him a terrific winning chance around the 8-1 mark.
