Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays for Australian TAB meetings on January 8.
Six TAB meetings are held across Australia on this Wednesday at Warwick Farm, Yarra Valley, Sandown, Rockhampton, Rockhampton, Bunbury & Devonport.
Warwick Farm: Race 2 @ 2:55pm
Charles Seven has the pace to cross and lead Rammstein and Cathars at a good clip. GARRISON (5) was heavily supported first up over 1100m at Rosehill but lacked a turn of foot in the straight and missed a place. Blinkers on today and gets an extra 100m which are both big ticks. Great chance to pay back the punters. CHARLES SEVEN (3) showed great dash to lead but was mowed down close to home and finished runner-up when resuming over 900m at Newcastle. Kept fresh since that run over a month ago. Sure to take some catching. CATHARS (2) returns from a long spell as a gelding. Showed promise in the maiden campaign and a big first up run would not surprise. DOMINUS (4) is trialling well so a forward showing on debut is on the cards. SELECTIONS: #5 Garrison to win.

Devonport: Race 5 @ 3:25pm
Good pace with 1 and 7 pressing through to contest the lead. FITZWILLIAM (1) ran well last start placing second at Launceston and should be at his top with three runs under the belt now. In good form and will press forward. SCHAZEM (4) was a winner at this journey and circuit last time out and can make it back to back wins in another suitable looking race. Rates an each way chance. MISS MAMOSA (6) resumes after four months. Fresh winner last time around and certainly comes into calculations. GEE GEE REDHEAD (10) finished among the placings last time and has a hope along with RAAY OF TIME (7) who races first up today. SELECTIONS: Backing Fitzwilliam.
Sandown: Race 2 @ 4:15pm
Pace from Lansbrook and Magnajet with pressure around them sure to keep things honest. WEDGETAIL (3) may not have had a lot behind him first up but he won really well and rated highly. He can go right on with that now in a race that looks sure to prove within his range. He is top pick. WILMOT PASS (6) was okay fresh. Top jock on and looks sure to improve second up for the sharp yard. Has shown good talent previously. RUTHERFORD (11) is another that can come on second up and his fresh form stacks up well. OUR FREE SPIRIT (9) next best. SELECTIONS: #1 Like Wedgetail off a sharp return win.
Yarra Valley: Race 7 @ 4:30pm
Speed to burn with Sally Sells Shells going fast ahead of Invincible Lotus. INVINCIBLE LOTUS (5) was in the betting first up over 955m at Moonee Valley but battled in the closing stages and could only finish 4th. Big class drop today and has been given a freshen up - very tough to beat with the main threats scratched. MISTAKE (1) settled back then accelerated impressively to win easily first up over this course and distance. Drawn well and with the claim is well-placed again. SALLY SELLS SHELLS (9) led and just failed to hang on over this trip at Echuca recently. On a much quicker back-up than usual. Will prove very hard to run down. The winner will come from this trio. LORD MORNINGTON (8) needs this run but is the pick of the remaining runners. SELECTIONS: Hard to go past #5 Invincible Lotus.
Rockhampton: Race 5 @ 5.35pm (AEDT)
SPRING CREEK (3) is racing well. Kicked off this campaign with back-to-back wins at this course and placed here last time. Was only beaten 3L when tackling city company two back. Strong chance. BARACHIEL (1) was a touch disappointing last time but his previous two visits to this course produced a win and a second so he is worth another chance. MAGIC WU (7) ran on well for fourth at this course last time. Contender. GUISSOLA (6) has been racing consistently and can feature again from the inside draw. SELECTIONS: #3 Spring Creek has the form to win.
