Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays for Australian TAB meetings on January 9.
Five TAB meetings are held across Australia on this Thursday at Wagga, Geelong, Stony Creek, Doomben & Geraldton.
Doomben: Race 3 @ 3:50pm (AEDT)
GRAND SHANGHAI (8) kept chasing when beaten less then 3L at Sunshine Coast. That was his first hitout for six months so it will have improved him and he should appreciate the extra 200m. Gets his chance to win. GRAND BARRAIL (2) missed narrowly when resuming two back and may be looking for this trip now. MELAINA ROCK (9) improved for second last time and has each way appeal third up while ELGIN (1) can be competitive with luck from the gate. SELECTIONS: #8 Grand Shanghai for the win stepping up to the mile.

Wagga: Race 2 @ 1:15pm
Sharlie will capitalise on the inside draw and press forward - pace just moderate. SHARLIE (3) settled further back than expected last time out over 1400m at this track before making good late inroads. Likely to press on from gate one and will be hard to catch off a modest tempo. OVERFLOWING (5) is racing well and the maiden win looks imminent. Sat outside the leader and boxed on okay to finish 3rd at Bathurst last start over 1400m. Just lacking a turn of foot at seven furlongs at the moment so the progression to a mile could be the winning move. ROOM NUMBER (6) was shunned in betting but rallied late to be beaten less than a length on debut over 1300m at Canberra recently. Sure to be hard to hold out over the longer trip. MUDGEGONGA (4) is an honest mare ready to peak third up. SELECTIONS: #3 Sharlie is tremendous each-way value.
Geelong: Race 6 @ 4:20pm
Lead up for grabs with 6, 7, 10 all capable of taking up positive spots. IOWA HAWKEYE (6) ran fourth last start at Caulfield over 1800m when beaten 2.25 lengths. Top chance off what looks a good piece of form for this and think that he can be a sharp improver. SWISS HERO (3) finished among the placegetters in the same race at Caulfield and obviously must have a great hope through the same formline. SACRED KIWI (8) will be rock-hard fit now following a nice effort at Colac last start when first. Looks a strong place chance. WHITE THYME (7) can run well while NORTH AFRIKA (10) has been in the market at his last couple of starts and ran well last start when fourth at Moonee Valley. Rates a chance. SELECTIONS: Backing Iowa Hawkeye.
Geraldton: Race 2 @ 5:25pm (AEDT)
Solid tempo anticipated. ECHO STAR (8) raced handy and stuck on well when finishing second at this track last start over 1400m. Rates well off the back of that and should be prominent throughout again. OCEAN RICHES (4) ran well last start when finishing third at this track and should be at peak now. Looks a leading contender. ROBYN'S SON (1) will be rock-hard fit now following a nice effort at this track last start when fourth. Rates a hope. LEAD GUITAR (12) finished eighth last start, beaten 6.5 lengths at Pinjarra over 1200m. Big watch back in this grade. BREEAQUA (9) has two placings from four runs this prep and finished 6 lengths off the winner last start at this track, could sneak a place with some luck. SELECTIONS: Keen on Echo Star, she looks ready to win.
