Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays for Australian TAB meetings on January 16.
Six TAB meetings are held across Australia on this Thursday at Gosford, Ararat, Pakenham, Doomben, Geraldton & Penola.
Pakenham: Race 8 @ 9:30pm
FALLS (4) resumes and is promising. When last seen he was beaten a nose as favourite in much stronger city grade. Oliver’s booking suggests he will be ready to go and is the one to beat if he is. RING OF HONOUR (9) was strong late on resumption winning the Geelong Maiden. This is an obvious step-up but he’s in good hands and has a future. THE REGIMENT (13) deserved the win this level at Cranbourne and that gives him a chance. Not sure the rail is ideal. SELECTIONS: Looks a nice first-up assignment for #4 Falls. Others that interest tonight are Nonconformist in Race 4 and Petruchio in Race 5.

Penola: Race 1 @ 1:15pm
Al Ma Belle can lead and may not get to much pressure if she does. AL MA BELLE (8) just missed the latest in stronger grade and clearly rates to win. The claimer will push forward and will probably get control. CLASSY LAD (1) is lightly raced and hasn’t been far away in most of his outings. A chance if the above falters. PEER OF BLUE (5) has had a few chances but can fill a spot in this line-up. EKALNED (2) will be fitter and may be best of the rest. SELECTIONS: A very tough program at Penola. In Race 1, #8 Al Ma Belle is short (evens is fair), but should have an edge.
Gosford: Race 2 @ 2:00pm
Mr Costigan from a good gate to lead over Brilliant Mind sliding across. JUDICATOR (4) is a promising three-year-old who resumed with a close 3rd over the mile at Wyong last start in a Class 2. Tried hard after stalking the leader but lacked the race fitness. Will take a lot from that run and getting to this trip for the first time will suit. BRILLIANT MIND (1) was runner-up over 2100m at Wyong two runs back then struggled at metro level over 2400m last time. Better placed today and has the blinkers on for this shorter trip. SWITCHING TO WIN (2) failed to measure up in town recently over 1800m. Fitter for two runs back and is a winner at the track and distance. MR COSTIGAN (8) hasn't been far away of late - each-way prospect. SELECTIONS: #4 Judicator has the upside and can win second up.
Doomben: Race 6 @ 5:50pm (AEDT)
ALDERMAN (3) was back in the winner's list at Sunshine Coast last start. That was his first try at this distance and he is drawn to get the favours. Strong winning chance again. AXELLA (11) has been thereabouts of late and looks to have found a suitable assignment. MURLESS (5) ran on to score over this distance last start and could go on with it. PEMBROKE CASTLE (1) looks ready to produce more third up while CURRUMBIN CRAFT (17) went close last start and may be getting back to form. SELECTIONS: #3 Alderman to go back to back.
