Moleman out shoots Olympic hopefuls

3 minute read

Danielle Moleman won the 10-metre air pistol at the Olympic nomination trials, but she can't shoot the discipline in Tokyo after missing a quota score in 2019.

Danielle Moleman's joy at winning the 10-metre air pistol gold at the Olympic nomination trials has been tempered by the realisation she cannot target the event in Tokyo.

Moleman upstaged better credentialed rivals at the Brisbane International Shooting Centre on Saturday with a score of 236.7, but is not in the frame for the category in Japan because she failed to score a minimum quota score last year.

Instead she settled for beating Olympians Elena Galiabovitch (235.3) and Dina Aspandiyarova (213.4).

"I switch on for finals. I love them. People say that I look calm, but my heart rate is going through the roof and I can feel it," said Moleman, who won the Oceania title last year.

She is now hoping to nail Australia's single quota position in the 25m pistol competition on Sunday.

Aspandiyarova (1152 points) heads the race for Australian team selection in the women's 10m Air Pistol ahead of Galiabovitch (1131 points) after topping the first two qualifying rounds.

Meanwhile, Sergei Evglevski continued his dominance in the men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol with his second gold medal in successive days.

Evglevski scored of 32 hits from 40 shots to easily defeat Thomas Ashmore (22) and Scott Anderson (14).

After recording just one hit in his first flight of five shots, Evglevski regained his composure and completed three perfect flights of five hits, and four flights of four hits.

With another world class qualifying round of 582 from 600 shots, Evglevski is in a commanding position to win selection for his first Olympic Games.
