Australian sharpshooter Ryan Broekhoff has joined Ben Simmons at the Philadelphia 76ers for their run at the NBA championship.

The Sixers needed to bolster their three-point shooting before the season resumes next month in Orlando.

Broekhoff has been in free agent limbo since the Dallas Mavericks waived him in February and the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the season.

On Saturday 76ers general manager Elton Brand announced the signing of Broekhoff but terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"I am excited to be joining the @sixers and ready to help the team in the playoffs," the 29-year-old Broekhoff posted on social media.

The Victoria-born forward was one of the best pure shooters available on the free agent market before the season restart.

Broekhoff shot 40.3 per cent on threes in his two-year 59-game stint in Dallas.

Brett Brown, coach of the 76ers and Australia's men's Olympics team, is no stranger to the outside threat Broekhoff presents to opposition teams.

The inconsistent 76ers are sixth in the eastern conference and have missed the three-point shooting JJ Redick, who joined the New Orleans Pelicans last year, provided in past seasons.

Broekhoff will wear No.45 for Philadelphia.
