Townsville in double-header for Supercars

3 minute read

Townsville will host a Supercars double-header as the touring car series continues to rework a 2020 schedule ravaged by COVID-19 complications.

Supercars organisers have again tinkered with the touring car series' 2020 schedule, throwing another Townsville round into the mix.

The far north Queensland city will host two events across back-to-back weekends as Supercars boss Sean Seamer attempts to complete the championship amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Townsville Supersprint will take place on August 29-30 with another quick-fire format locked in for September 5-6.

Spectators will be allowed to attend both events at Reid Park.

It comes after the Darwin Triple Crown, which was due to begin on Saturday, has been pushed back to August 15-16.

Seamer wants the second Darwin race to still go ahead, with midweek twilight racing a consideration to avoid a clash with the Northern Territory election on August 22.

Some drivers and crews are isolating in Darwin after the NT government declared certain areas of southeast Queensland as COVID-19 hotspots.

All Supercars teams have been based in and around the Gold Coast since last month's Sydney round.

After leaving Townsville, Supercars drivers are meant to be racing at Sandown in outer Melbourne, but the September 19-20 event will need to be cancelled with Victorians in a COVID-19 lockdown.

That is the last scheduled round before the Supercars' premier event, the Bathurst 1000, from October 8-11.

Seamer is considering whether to finish the season at Mount Panorama instead of the planned Sydney SuperNight in December, with border closures continuing to create problems for sport across the country.

All Melbourne-based teams have already been away from home for a month after relocating to Queensland as a second wave of coronavirus hit Victoria.
