Highlights from September 21 - day seven of the Sydney Olympics.

WHAT HAPPENED ON SEPTEMBER 21, 2000 - DAY SEVEN OF THE SYDNEY OLYMPICS

Cycling - Scott McGrory and Brett Aitken won the men's madison, the first Australian gold on the track for 16 years. Australia would go back-to-back when Graeme Brown and Stuart O'Grady won in Athens 2004.

Gary Neiwand took silver in the men's keirin. It was his second medal in Sydney, and his fourth in total.

Fencing - Valentina Vezzali won her first of three gold medals in the women's individual foil. The Italian also won the team foil three times. Her six gold medals and nine Olympic medals in total are still most by any woman in fencing, and the most by an Italian woman at the Olympics.

Swimming - Matt Welsh took bronze in the men's 200m backstroke, after claiming silver in the 100m backstroke three days earlier. He became the first Australian to win two backstroke medals at a single Olympic Games.

Swimming - Inge de Bruijn won the women's 100m freestyle, after Pieter van den Hoogenband won the men's event for Netherlands earlier. The Netherlands became the first country since the United States in 1984 to win both these events at a single Games. This feat has not been achieved since.

Badminton - Indonesia won the men's doubles event, repeating their victory in Atlanta 1996. Indonesia has won seven gold medals in the history of the Olympic Games, all in badminton, its national sport.
