Highlights from September 22 - day eight of the Sydney Olympics.

WHAT HAPPENED ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2000 - DAY EIGHT OF THE SYDNEY OLYMPICS

Swimming - US duo Anthony Ervin and Gary Hall Jr shared the gold medal in the men's 50m freestyle after both clocked 21.98 seconds in the final. Ervin came back in London 2012 to finish fifth in this event and then stunned the swimming world by winning gold at the age of 35 at the 2016 Rio Games. He holds the record for the longest span between winning individual Olympic gold medals.

Swimming - Michael Klim and Geoff Huegill finished second and third in the men's 100m butterfly behind Sweden's Lars Frolander. It was the first time Australia had won two medals in this event at a single Games.

Equestrian - Australian Andrew Hoy took silver in the individual event, behind the United States' David O'Connor and ahead of Mark Todd from New Zealand. Todd would go on and participate seven times in the Olympic Games (1984-2016, missing 1996 and 2004), winning a record six medals, including two golds. Hoy would also become a seven-time Olympian, a record for any Australian.

Judo - David Douillet (France) successfully defended his title in the men's +100kg event, becoming the second man to achieve this feat in this event, after Hitoshi Saito (Japan) in 1988. After retiring from sport, Douillet entered politics and was France's sports minister from 2011-12.
