Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays for Australian TAB meetings on January 1.
Major Australian thoroughbred TAB meetings today are held at Flemington, Canterbury, Ipswich, Murray Bridge and Mornington.
FLEMINGTON: RACE 8 @ 6:55PM
Several who can bounce handy and the full field should keep the pace very true. Liked the first up run from Quantum Mechanic (14) with an eye to improving back to the mile and she gets just that here. Bigger track is sure to suit as well having posted her best efforts last prep both here and at Sandown. Those efforts rate highly. CAFFREY (4) did plenty of work in a fast race here last time at 1800m. Back to the mile may suit and a soft draw looks a big plus. Can be a sharp improver. FUNDRAISER (3) is racing really well and must have a good winning chance once again. ANIRISHMAN (9) another to consider. SELECTIONS: Backing Quantum Mechanic to improve sharply second up.

CANTERBURY: RACE 6 @ 3:50PM
Strong early tempo with Discharged and Spaceboy leading the way. ELEVEN ELEVEN (7) showed nice improvement second up when winning at Wyong last start. Capable on rain affected ground and should be able to build further third run from a spell. Chat (8) has been ultra consistent in three runs this prep since winning fresh at this course over 1100m. Definite chance. HIGHTAIL (5) resumes. Last campaign held his own at stakes level. First up record is excellent. DISCHARGED (11) will be better over slightly further. Regardless, first up record is strong and is unbeaten at this course from two prior visits. SPACEBOY (12) next best. Has placed in three of his four runs this prep. Should lead and take catching. SELECTIONS: Don't mind Chat each way.
IPSWICH: RACE 8 @ 6:15PM
Expecting Bushido to take up the running at a genuine tempo. Bushido (5) was a strong winner last time over 1100m at this track, scoring by 3 lengths. Has won third up before so could go on with it. ROYAL SHEEN (7) was a winner at this track last start at the same distance and has been in good form this campaign, winning twice. Contender. DUNNERS (11) scored last start at Toowoomba to make it two wins from four starts. Not to be discounted. SELECTIONS: Going with Bushido.
MURRAY BRIDGE: RACE 7 @ 5:11PM
From the inside gate Rose Tiara will lead from You Es Marshal. Circus Dancer (3) settled well back then came home powerfully to score by one length over 1100m at Strathalbyn last start. In form and expected to run on into the finish again. ROSE TIARA (16) resumed over 1050m at Morphettville and ran on nicely for second, beaten 2.8 lengths. Overall record is sound when second up and the extra trip is ideal. Looks very hard to toss from the inside alley. SMART ALICK (15) showed good early dash and stalked the pace before edging clear for a narrow win over 1100m at Oakbank last time. Record here sound including two wins and two placings from nine starts. Should be involved in the finish. SCOUT'S HONOUR (12) wasn't beaten far first up at Morphettville and is open to improvement. SELECTIONS: Liking Circus Dancer.
MORNINGTON: RACE 1 @ 1:31PM
Expecting little early pressure where Capito, Girramay and Angelic Amour can be prominent without a noted leader. Glint (11) put in an encouraging effort at Sale last start to suggest that is it coming together. Had to travel wide in the run, too. Interference might have cost WHIRLWIND ROMANCE (10) from finishing closer at Wodonga and can't be left out of calculations here. ANGELIC AMOUR (4) put in an improved run at second outing which was at this track in mid-December. Might be the value runner, too. WARLIST (3) should know this place by now - third start today and has also been showing improvement. GIRRAMAY (5) just needs to settle better in the run but has to go into exotics calculations. SELECTIONS: Glint the win.
