If Supercars races were one lap, Ford star Cam Waters would be sitting pretty.

The Tickford Racing star's Mustang was dominant in qualifying to claim pole position for both of Sunday's races at Symmons Plains in Tasmania.

Sadly, over the 44-lap races that qualifying speed couldn't turn into a race win or even a podium as Waters finished a heartbreaking fourth - twice.

Waters held the early advantage in Sunday's first race before being reeled in by eventual winner Jamie Whincup midway through.

He was then passed by Whincup's teammate Shane Van Gisbergen, with Dick Johnson Racing's Will Davison making the most of the move to snatch third.

In the second race, Waters was jumped on the start line by ex-teammate Chaz Mostert who would go on to surge to a commanding win.

Despite that, the Ford ace looked set to at least come away with a podium finish before he was swallowed up by DJR pair Anton De Pasquale and Davison in the dying laps and again had to settle for a fourth.

"Just tried to get the tyres to hang on," a frustrated Waters told Fox Sports.

"I thought we were going alright and I thought we were going to get there to the end but yeah those last, probably, six laps they fell off a cliff.

"I was battling out there, I just couldn't quite get it done."

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
