Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for January 28.
Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Canterbury, Cranbourne, Hamilton, Scone, Taree and Townsville.
CANTERBURY: RACE 5 @ 8:00 PM
JUST A JEDI (3) disappointed last time out but go on solid Gosford win two back. Goes very well for Innes Jr who has had eight steers for two wins and four placings and draws the inside alley. Rates the testing material against this lot. FORTIFIED (1) has won second-up before and has placed over this track and trip. Among the leading chances. JUST BUSINESS (8) has placed two from two around this circuit and can play a role again. CHAMPAGNE VEGA (10) will be near his peak now and can earn a cheque. The well-related JOSEPHUS (9) best of the rest.

CRANBOURNE: RACE 2 @ 6:45 PM
SET THE SAILS (5) was a beaten favourite in a much stronger race before going for a spell and has obviously ability. He would have matured over the break and will be very hard to beat in this, especially from the good draw. SHOOT UR SHOT (3) has looked the winner on more than one occasion and was a sound fifth when resuming last start. He is up in trip and should sit close to the speed, a bold effort is expected. Include in all combinations. KLONDIKE STRIKE (1) improved steadily during his last preparation and would have matured over his break. He is likely to just sit off the pace and could have the last say if they go fast front early on. TRUE GRIT (6) is having his first start and has Damian Lane riding which is usually a good lead. The blinkers are added and he is a very interesting runner. The markets will tell the full story.

HAMILTON: RACE 3 @ 2:30 PM
ANDRESS (9) has placed 2/3 this campaign at Warrnambool and hasn't been having the best of it. She has more to give and fitter is good enough to manage the wide barrier. She can bounce back. MOXATATION (7) resumed much improved placing at Echuca hitting the line well. He will have come on and shapes as a danger. GATEWAYS (10) was much better placing in the country and is a chance building on that. A gap to the others.

SCONE: RACE 4 @ 3:05 PM
SPEECH (2) is a promising Godolphin filly resuming from a four-month spell. Opened the maiden prep with a soft all-the-way win over this trip at Newcastle then started favourite but found a couple better at Warwick Farm before being turned out. Eligible for easier races but looks smart enough to take care of this field. THE WAYFARER (1) took the lead before straightening then battled on well to be beaten just a length over this course and distance at his last run seven weeks ago. Freshened up and back in grade. Sure to be prominent. MISS LAMAR (5) led and never looked in danger when resuming 11 days ago over this distance at Queanbeyan. Lightly-raced mare with plenty more to offer. Back-marker MISS KINGSTON (4) gave away too much start at Muswellbrook last time but caught the eye at the end of 1000m. Today's trip is not ideal but she will be running on. Distance specialist EXPECT A HERO (3) returned in good order at Cowra last time. Each-way chance.
SELECTIONS: #2 Speech to win.
TAREE: RACE 6 @ 4:40 PM
CIAO BICKY (3) looks another decent winning chance for the potent Bullock-Lees linkage. Peaks off the three placings and the lift to the mile will suit. Will settle back and come hard. MR CHEEKY (2) debuted in town and then went to Nowra and did a good job to place after a slow start. Draws for the run of the race and fitter can make the finish. MR EIGHTY EIGHT (1) overcame a stack of trouble beaten 1L here 17 days ago. He has more to offer and the sticky gate should be managed. DOUBLE AWARD (5) is on the improve and rates well. The mile suits and the winkers are on first time.
SELECTIONS: Backing Ciao Bicky in a good contest.
TOWNSVILLE: RACE 7 @ 5:10 PM
THE TAX ACCOUNTANT (2) came from second to last on the turn last start to win easily here over 1400m. With jockey Graham Kliese back in the stable he can repeat the dose. LANGHRO (1) rates well here after a last start third here when overracing during the middle stages of the race. From a handy draw and if he can settle better today he should be figuring in the finish. TUTELAGE (3) races well on soft tracks and following a fresh-up run last start when finishing fourth of seven over 1400m at this track should be a leading contender. Include in all combinations. PLAY ME NOW (5) is fresh-up after a 21 week spell and races well in that state, can surprise in this line-up so don't overlook his chances.
