Sydney Specials: Randwick – April 15

3 minute read

Those having a quaddie at Randwick on Saturday get the opportunity to go one out in the opening leg.

A field of ten has been assembled for the Group 1 Champagne Stakes at Randwick on Saturday where the Peter Snowden-trained Invader looks head and shoulders above the rest.

The Snitzel colt has improved with each career run to date and last start was far too good in taking out the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick a fortnight ago.

Invader now strikes a lesser field on Saturday contesting the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

The well bred two-year-old possesses the best form lines in this field by some way with even his second in the Todman Stakes (1200m) behind former stablemate Gunnison strong enough to be taking this out.

He found a new level in winning the Sires’ Produce Stakes a fortnight ago.

It would take a sharp decline in Invader’s form or dramatic improvement from one of his rivals to prevent the colt from claiming a Group 1 double.

Further insurance comes from the fact he is trained by one of the leading two-year-old stables in the country, Team Snowden.

The Sires Produce – Champagne Stakes double has been achieved 40 times, 12 of those coming in the past 30 years.

Peter Snowden is responsible for one of those doubles with Guelph having achieved the feat in 2013.

Snowden has also won the Champagne Stakes with Skilled (2010) and Helmet (2011).

Invader is presently quoted at even money or a shade into odds on.

He shapes as the best bet of the day and an obvious leg to go one out in if having a quaddie.

The final leg of the quaddie looks to be something of a minefield with more than half the field resuming over 1400m on a testing track.

They say nothing beats race fitness and Marenostro is one of the handful of runners in the race who possesses it.

Marenostro resumed well in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m), settling back then working home solidly into third behind promising import Spectroscope.

He now drops in grade and distance second up to contest the Hong Kong J C Trophy Benchmark 100 Handicap (1400m).

Marenostro is an honest as they come type who appears well suited in this field.

His second up record is strong and most importantly, the gelding produces his best work on rain affected ground.

After three straight Saturday’s of big fields and programs, the Randwick course proper should be a rather testing track, something which will play into the hands of Marenostro.

The 2kg claim is used to good effect and once again, the son of Duelled possesses a fitness edge over most of those who sit high in the market.
