Best From The West - August 4

3 minute read

The Chris Gangemi trained Super Maxi has been very good since transferred from Team Hawkes and is well set-up to win the fourth event at Belmont on Saturday.

An impressive winner in his WA debut, Super Maxi went on to finish second behind the flying Ambiente, most notably he wasn't marked far off his peak.

Three subsequent winners have already come out of the race and really like him off a freshen up (42 days) on Saturday.

The unseasonal rain has resulted in a heavy track at Belmont, conditions which certainly favour Super Maxi.

When under the care of Team Hawkes, his best form was achieved on rain affected going and the rails draw sees him land into a lovely spot for Knuckey.

At the weights he is very well placed and certainly deserves his place at the head of the market.

Gangemi has proven a master of tried horses and Super Maxi appears no different.

In a race lacking depth he simply should be too good.

Sticking with the Gangemi stable in the sixth event with Crystal Spirit.

A new addition to the stable (formerly trained by Ellerton and Zhara), Crystal Spirit displayed good ability in Victoria and looks to have been given every chance by the handicapper.

Although only possessing the sole win to his name, he repeatedly put up form good enough to win this event and he should have no concerns with the wet-track.

Last season Gangemi had 12 tried horses make their debut for his stable, of that 12, five won (42%) and a further four placed (75%) - he is the master.

A noted backmarker, the wide draw should keep him out of trouble and with clear air on straightening he should prove very hard to hold out.
