Race By Race Canberra Preview -- February 1

3 minute read

With some showers possible in the evening the track should present in good order with a bit of cut. The rail out 8m will enhance the prospects of gallopers racing handy.

A couple of small fields early but good numbers later in the program.

Interest in the performances of Farthing Wood and Duchess Of Windsor who both impressed at the last meeting. The $40,000 Federal has again drawn a competitive field with the well-rated Action Shale presenting on the quick return and seeking to master the jump in trip.

Race 1

Mostly debutants and the speed is up for grabs. The market will tell a lot. (3) MANHATTAN MARVEL finds a suitable race to kick off in. The Warwick Farm trial behind McLaren at Warwick Farm was good and he debuts at Rosehill tomorrow and is $1.70 in early markets. Brendan Ward is a positive booking. (4) OFF TO MOE'S didn't put in at all on debut in the rich Inglis Nursery. Has trialled well here prior and presents today as a gelding. Gets the low draw and Billy Owen and quick improvement is on the cards. (6) LILLY PILLY BRO debuts and is bred to be good and fast. Brings a Warwick Farm trial and gets the rail and is sure to race well. (1) BRO trialled well here and debuts with Cahill sticking. A cheeky run wouldn't shock.

Race 2

Lucky Symbol can lead and the (2) STEPHAN has a 50% win record and has only missed a place once in 8 career starts. Resumes today of strong city efforts and is sharp fresh. Gets the handy claim and should sit a lot closer today. This looks very suitable for the progressive galloper. (3) WHO'S KNOCKING resumes and is another local with plenty of upside. Has won 4/10 and only missed a place twice and flies early in her campaigns. Draws to advantage and will be right in it. (6) MIXED BLOSSOM got a lot closer here 3U and should be at her best today. The gate and claim both assist and she can make the finish. (4) LUCKY SYMBOL has won three FU but will have to find a length or two to threaten.

Race 3

A few speedy types present with Oh My Mimi the likely leader. (7) FARTHING WOOD keeps improving under Trevor McIlrick and was much too good for the Maidens here two weeks ago. The ex Weir galloper will settle off them and just needs to find an economical way through to make it a double. (4) OH MY MIMI is Sydney-trained and missed a nose in Maidens before the spell. Resumes off a Warwick Farm trial win with Lever riding off a handy gate and expect the Snitzel filly to come back improved. (3) THE UNKNOWN FACTOR has had support the two runs back but has spoiled things with slow offs. Showed promise leading into his Black Opal run and a much better effort is on the cards. (6) DICTATION resumes off an Orange trial win and missed a lip in a Wagga 50 before the spell. Needs to find more to win this but expect her to hit the line well with Cahill booked.

Race 4

Problematic who leads and Sharp Tune may take the opportunity. (9) SHARP TUNE will use the rail and made sharp improvement missing a lip 18 days ago at Nowra. That reads well for this contest and she will get all the favours. (5) PARIS LIGHTS interests. Was wide throughout placing behind Farthing Wood here FU and that’s a strong form reference. She is bred to be fast and good and fitter just needs a good ride to threaten. (1) KIANGA resumes for the ACT premiership yard and has placed twice fresh. Has form behind Mossman Gorge and Maid Of Ore and Cahill’s booking suggests he’s ready to go following a longish break. (4) WHENWILLYOUARRIVE debuts off a low gate for Joe Pride and has had a couple of Warwick Farm trials to prepare him for this. Is likely better than the form-line in those suggests and monitor the market very closely.

Race 5

There’s good pace across the barriers with Keitaro the one likely to lead drawn low. (4) FRANCISCO PIZARO just missed from the speed on debut and then cleared Maidens at Moruya belting home after getting back from the wide gate. The draw doesn’t help again but the Joe Ible galloper looks to have plenty on upside. (3) MAGIC WU is Sydney-trained and ran a good figure winning the Maiden on debut. Stalked the lead again on resumption at Nowra and ran out of puff late and gets the blinkers applied first time for this. Uses the rail and can improve quickly. (5) ENJOY THE STARS resumes for Nick Olive from a wide barrier but has speed and they may elect to push forward. Brings strong heavily-backed form from the Acton synthetic and expect a bold effort racing on the Canberra grass the first time. (12) HEAVEN ON EARTH deserved 2U Maiden win and then got back and just missed at CL2 level at Moruya. Draws handy and will be around the mark. (1) BLACK WAND is a former Queenslander now with Kurt Goldman and the form stacks up. Draws out and the stable debut may be held off for another day. Elevate if he runs here.

Race 6

Larmour can slide over and make the speed from Baaone. A tricky Maiden and luck will play its part in the large field. (1) BAANONE presents for the Baker yard and brings solid efforts in provincial company and Lever sticks from the latest. Peaks now and will get all the favours from the handy gate. (11) LARMOUR runs along and is a Nick Olive improver who placed 3U at Wagga this trip. She will be right on the speed and expect her to take running down. (6) CLEARLY NOW brought good ratings to the 2U run here a month ago and was expected to win. Like others on the day found the track too firm and expect a much sharper effort with the blinkers applied again and a much more amenable surface. (10) DATAI got closer 3U and the extra trip should suit. The Matt Dale galloper has been disappointing but improvement today wouldn’t surprise and he keeps the claim. (7) VISAVIS has to contend with a wide gate but the ex Waller galloper showed plenty here last time and has to be considered.

Race 7

Action Shale and Embezzlement provide the speed. (2) ACTON SHALE was tracking well and then didn’t have the best of it in stronger at Randwick. Nick Olive presents him on the six-day back up up 300m and trusting the yard that it will suit. Draws low and will get every chance. (3) EMBEZZLEMENT brings similar figures and was back to form placing 3U in better at Rosehill. Gets the handy claim and expect her to make short work of the wide gate. (6) LUGA LAD looks the next best of the Olive trio and seeks the hat-trick. Needs a good ride from Ward but keeps improving and hard to knock. Stablemate (5) RELIANT has been threatening and forget the latest when he was wide throughout and the rider lost the whip. Has has a month away and could be the smokey. (10) SMILING AT SHADOWS is up to this but as the form-line shows he gets shy when he sees the post.

Race 8

Major Time can lead and Eurosay has the speed to clear the wide gate and tail her. Expecting the large field to run along and give every runner their chance. (4) DUCHESS OF WINDSOR sat back and flew late to miss a lip behind Uralla Kingdom here two weeks ago as favourite and that said ‘back me next time’. Looks primed at her third-race run and the extra 100m can only suit. (1) EUROSAY ran an identical figure to the above missing a nose 2U at Wagga sitting close-up but three wide. Keeps improving but will need a touch of luck. (17) BANJA LUKA has missed a lip the last two and from the get-go will be right in the action again. Keeps the small claim and gets another chance. (3) MAJOR TIME is fast and just snapped late from the speed behind Uralla Kingdom at her second race run. Better for that and expect him to stick on better. (7) SPEED CAMERA didn’t have the best of it at the provincials FU. The Newcastle placing prior on the slow reads well but she has to manage a cruel gate today.

BEST BET: Race 3 (7) Farthing Wood.

BEST BET: Race 8 (4) Duchess Of Windsor.
