Sydney Specials - February 2

3 minute read

Some high quality horses are on the comeback trail at Rosehill this weekend and we’re on their bandwagon.

Le Romain
Le Romain Picture: Racing and Sports

In the feature G2 Expressway Stakes, Le Romain will be trying to lift his All Star Mile credentials to the voting public.

Last time in he won first up at 1200m carrying a big weight for James McDonald and he has his mate back on this Saturday.

There was nothing conventional about the tough gelding’s campaign in the Spring and yet he gave a great sight in G1 mile races like the George Main and Cantala.

In between he was so brave into fourth in the wet Everest at Randwick.

Thinking here that he will have race track position on Alizee and off two trials could well be fit enough to hold them off.

After being a dual acceptor, very happy the Waller stable has decided to run Seaway in Race 7.

He ventured north in the winter and was a very solid run in the Queensland Guineas.

With the ability to handle any conditions, he is a safe play on those grounds and love that he’s resuming at 1500m given the breeding suggests as he gets older he’ll need more ground.

The stable love to take advantage of a low draw so he should at worst be midfield getting cover.

Love the booking of McDonald again here.

Alizee is now unbeaten in two runs since resuming, following her first-up in the Christmas Classic (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick on December 29 with another impressive win here. She was ridden quietly and settled nicely for Blake Shinn in last place in the five-horse field, moved up on turning for home, sprinted quickly to hit the front at the 200m and then drew away to score easily by two lengths. Le Romain had a nice trip in third place on the rails, got a split at the 200m and then battled on well for second in a sound first-up effort. Dothraki went to the front, was pressured coming to the home turn and kept fighting on well to take third. The favourite Trapeze Artist raced outside the leader (Dothraki), briefly looked dangerous on straightening and then held on for (2.9 lengths) fourth at his first start this preparation. Hartnell raced in fourth place until the home turn and then battled on from the point to finish (3.6 lengths) last in the five-horse field. He should be improved by the run and will appreciate further.
