The eyes of the racing world will be on the farewell of Winx up at Randwick but Caulfield throws up another good betting meeting down south.
Steel Prince had to dig in late in the piece at Mornington to get his nose in front when things look dead and buried with 100m to go. It was a great finishing effort and it all bodes well for the step up to 2400m now.
The step to 2400m dragged the best out of Steel Prince last campaign, never out of the first two in five runs at the trip, and those efforts were highlighted by a fast win at Mornington and an even faster second at Caulfield - both returning ratings that would leave today's rivals hard pressed to trouble him.
Best of all, the lead looks there for the taking and he should take it. If not, he is going to be right on top of it, and it's going to be hard for slower horses to get by him from there. We're happy to be betting up.
For an each way play we will roll on to race six where the Bendigo Guineas form is to the fore.
There are three solid hopes through that race, and Tarwn looks a talent coming up in grade, but on expsoed form to date Approach Discreet has achieved as much as any of them and this looks an ideal trir for him to kick things off for the new yard.
There was a feeling - mostly from me - that he never really put it together last prep after looking very promising early, but it would be no shock to see him getting rolling at this time of year and he can start now without surprising.
