Best From The West: Kalgoorlie – 5th October 2019

3 minute read

The break between Belmont and Ascot is filled with the running of the Kalgoorlie carnival and the Cup in particular on Saturday.

Kalgoorlie
Kalgoorlie

It is a good edition of that Kalgoorlie Cup with plenty of chances and the fascination of Ihtsahymn back from Darwin.

However we are going for one racing on the limit being Spiritual Warrior who has won three on the trot.

He has loved getting to these sort of distances. Several times at Belmont he has raced on the speed and toughed it out, winning by small margins.

With a lovely drop in weight, he can race the same way from a soft barrier.

If they back a few others we can do better than the odds on offer.

The following race is one with a decent sized field and Stoicism ran well on his return to racing.

That came two weeks ago and he battled strongly on the pace.

There was support for him on that day and clearly he'd done enough work to be ready first up at the mile.

Fitter now he can push forward again from a middle alley and this is hardly a strong race. He seems well placed.

Making his first attempt at stakes level, Spiritual Warrior recovered after a rough early run, took control a long way out and had enough to hold on over the final 100m for career win eight including his last four in succession. He dipped when clipping heels with a circuit to run but recovered well to drive up and take over at the 1200m. Going comfortably, he led them into the home straight and shot clear at the 200m. The lead shrunk soon after but he had just enough in the tank to get home. First Affair was third last at the 500m, flew round the outer turning in and kept up a strong run to get within a long neck of the winner. Ihtsahymn chased the winner into the straight, challenged but found little then battled away to hold third from Inject The Venom who did best of the rest in a big line up for fourth.
